Shutler’s Market is asset to community

Dear Editor:

As it has been announced that Dec. 31, 2016, will mark the final day of operation of Shutler’s Market of Martins Ferry after 66 wonderful years of service to the community, I, as well as many others, am somewhat saddened as a result of the scheduled closing of this very fine business, but would also like to express my sincere gratitude to the Shutler family, as well as their many loyal employees over the years, and reflect on the positive impact Shutler’s Market has had on our community.

Shutler’s Market was founded and first opened in Martins Ferry by Charles and his brother Edwin Shutler Sr. in 1950. I vividly and fondly recall their well-known slogan, which also appeared on their vehicles at the time: “Stay ahead with Chuck and Ed!”

I also recall that during my frequent visits to Shutler’s during my youth the welcoming and friendly atmosphere of the store, an aspect of the business that has remained paramount over its many years of wonderful service to the community.

Shutler’s Market has continued to thrive as a very viable business since its 1950 opening and has been very successfully operated and managed by Ed Shutler Jr. and his wife, Vickie, since 1999 upon the passing of Ed Shutler Sr.

In addition to the original owners, many others have contributed greatly to the success of the market over the years, including Jeanette Shutler Davis and Bill Bosley, as well as numerous employees past and present who have played such an integral role in the very special Shutler’s “shopping experience.”

Although the closing of Shutler’s market marks the end of an era for this iconic Martins Ferry business that will be missed by many, I certainly understand that after so many years of outstanding service to the area, the Shutler family feels it is now time for them to begin a new chapter in their lives — that of retirement and spending more time with family.

In closing, I am grateful to the Shutler family and their many loyal employees for their dedication, professionalism, friendship and outstanding contributions to our community over their nearly seven decades of service. I wish all many happy and contented years ahead.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Richard Hord
