Consumers to pay for Trump’s wall

Dear Editor,

Donald Trump continues to insist on building a wall along the 1,954-mile border with Mexico. He has repeatedly said that Mexico will pay for the wall. He has since learned otherwise. His latest plan calls for a 20 percent tax on imports coming from Mexico. In my world, the imposition of a tax means that the consumer pays more. (If I’m wrong, please correct me.)

Under Trump’s plan, people looking to buy a Chevrolet Cruze hatchback, Ford Fusion or Jeep Compass, all of which are made in Mexico, should expect to see a price increase of 20 percent. If you choose to buy a base model Cruze, Fusion or Compass, equipped with standard options only, you can expect to pay an additional $4,400 to $4,900. Want more options? Be prepared to spend more money.

While you’re thinking about that car, remember that the United States annually imports approximately 192,000 barrels of oil from Mexico. Not only will you pay more for the car, you will pay more to fill it with gasoline.

Do you still want to build the wall? Just wondering.
