Second Amendment explained

Dear Editor,

The Second Amendment has been under fire by some politicians for decades because they want to demolish the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Please understand that if one right is lost the others will be lost.

The U.S. Constitution was created specifically to itemize the powers of the government and to restrain the government from the oppression of the people. The Constitution’s function is to protect us as a free people from government overreach.

The Bill of Rights was established as God-given rights which cannot be infringed upon. The founders didn’t create these rights, they were respected as God-given rights. We have a God-given right to defend ourselves.

Second Amendment: “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary for the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

Let’s break it down: “A well-regulated Militia” when penned meant (well organized and trained), “regulated” has nothing to do with government regulations as understood today.

“(T)he right of the people to keep and bear Arms” indicates the need for individual ownership of firearms because you can’t create a militia without armed individuals. At the time people owned war weapons.

“(S)hall not be infringed” The government cannot interfere with our rights to keep and bear arms.

The Second Amendment is found in the Bill of Rights: itemizing some of our rights. By the way, the Constitution has a militia clause which is different from the Bill of Rights where the Second Amendment resides.

The Second Amendment is for the people, not government-controlled militias.
