Advocating for Quality Care

Dear Editor,

May is Older Americans Month, a perfect time to highlight the Long-Term Care Ombudsman program at Direction Home Akron Canton Area Agency on Aging and Disabilities, which serves some of Ohio’s most vulnerable older adults. While the term “Ombudsman” might not be familiar to everyone, the mission is clear: advocating for individuals receiving long-term care services. Whether in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, adult group homes, or through in-home care, Ombudsmen work to empower, educate, and amplify the voices of individuals to ensure quality of care and dignity in daily living.

A vital aspect of the Long-Term Care Ombudsman’s work is helping individuals plan proactively for potential long-term care needs. This involves guiding Ohioans through their care options and providing resources to make informed decisions tailored to their specific circumstances. These impartial services, funded federally and by the state, are accessible free of charge through a simple phone call or email.

Equally important is the support Ombudsmen provide to those already residing in long-term care settings. They visit these communities to meet residents, help them understand their rights, and empower to advocate for better care. When residents request assistance, Ombudsmen step in to resolve issues related to care, safety, environment, personal preferences, and much more. Last year alone, 743 complaints were resolved for residents in Holmes, Coshocton, Muskingum, Tuscarawas, Guernsey, Carroll, Jefferson, Harrison and Belmont counties.

Every individual in long-term care deserves a safe environment, quality care, and respectful treatment. Ombudsmen play a crucial role in making this a reality for this underserved population.

If you or someone you know could benefit from these services, you can reach your local Long-Term Care Ombudsman at 1-800-967-0615 or email OMBforms@dhad.org.
