Principal Holt Leading Center McMechen Elementary Into Bright Future With New School, Caring Community

McMECHEN — Principal Arica Holt will be leading Center McMechen Elementary School’s students and staff in a brand new building in a few years, but there is one thing that likely won’t change – its strong connection to the community.

“Knowing that Center McMechen will soon have a brand-new school building has been very exciting,” she said. “Our current building holds so many memories, traditions and milestones, but it also comes with limitations that our students and staff have worked around for years.”

For example, the current school building still has the old-style open classrooms separated by dividers. This style of classroom can sometimes be distracting for students and teachers. The new school will have completely separate classrooms.

Holt noted the fact that the new building will be an updated modern space “designed specifically for today’s learners” fills her with “pride and optimism.”

“Leading the transition into a new school will be both a challenge and a privilege,” Holt added. “Change can be emotional, but it also brings tremendous opportunity. My goal is to honor our history while helping students, families, and staff embrace the possibilities of a fresh start.”

And what makes the school special is its connection to the community around it.

“Center McMechen is special because of its people and our community,” she said. “Our students are resilient, curious, and full of personality, and our teachers are dedicated, caring, and deeply invested in their success.

“There is a strong sense of family here, our students feel safe, valued and supported. Beyond academics, Center McMechen has a unique warmth and community spirit.

“Whether it’s school events, classroom celebrations or everyday interactions in the hallway, there is a genuine sense that everyone belongs here. That feeling of connection is what truly sets our school apart.”

The community and its churches often provide food bags for the students to eat on weekends and holidays. The school also helps children in need of clothing such as warm coats, hats and gloves during the winter.

Holt said she sees a “bright and inspiring future for Center McMechen.”

“With a new building on the horizon, we will have the opportunity to expand programs and create learning environments that foster creativity, collaboration and critical thinking,” she said. “I envision a school that continues to grow academically while maintaining its close-knit, supportive culture.

“More importantly, I see our students becoming confident, compassionate leaders who are prepared for whatever paths they choose. Center McMechen will remain a place where children are nurtured, challenged, and celebrated – not just for their achievements – but for who they are.”

Holt said she wanted to become the school’s principal because she was familiar with it and the community.

“My connection to Center McMechen began with my admiration for its strong reputation within the community,” she said. “Even before working here, I heard about the dedication of the staff and the welcoming atmosphere of the school. When the opportunity arose to join this team, I knew it was a place where I could truly make a difference.”

She described the employees as caring people.

“I want people to know how amazing our faculty and staff are and how deeply we care about every student who walks through our doors,” she said. “My role is not just about managing a school – it’s about building relationships, fostering growth, and ensuring that every child feels safe, valued and capable of success.

“As for Center McMechen, I want the community to know that this is more than just a school, it’s a place where lives are shaped, friendships are formed and futures are built. I am honored to be part of this incredible school family and excited for everything that lies ahead.”
