Doc Christy was there in spirit

I only met Dr. Glenn Christy one time, and then I didn’t know who he was.

I still really don’t know the man, but from what I’ve been told he was a true Buckeye fan.

“Doc Christy was one of the originals when we started this event back when Earle Bruce was the head coach,” said E.G. “Manny” Mehallis, organizer of the Buckeyes’ Boosters Golf Scramble which was held Tuesday at a rain-soaked Belmont Hills County Club in St. Clairsville. “There are three or four of that are still around from that first event.”

For the past several tournaments, Dr. Christy served as the tournament’s official scorekeeper.

“About a month or so ago I was kidding him,” Mehallis continued. “I told him that he had to keep score for us again this year, and he said ‘don’t worry, I’ll be there.’

Sad to say, Dr. Christy passed away last week.

“It’s sad, but I think he’s here in spirit today.

To serve as a reminder to all those who crossed paths with Dr. Christy, a picture of him and Coach (Jim) Tressel was displayed on the scoreboard. Underneath it was written, “God rest his soul.

“It’s kind of a memorial to him,” Mehallis noted.

While just about everyone taking part in yesterday’s golf outing wore some type of Scarlet and Gray, there one was participant who didn’t.

That would be St. Clairsville’s James Carson, who played his collegiate golf at the University of Michigan That might make for some good ribbing from his golfing companions, but Carson says it’s all good.

“I’m just here to support my friends,” Carson said between holes, and rain drops. “You always want to know what your competition is up to, so what better way than to play golf with them.

Carson said he’s been following the Wolverines football program and hopefully it won’t take new head coach Rich Rodriguez long to prove UM fans that he is indeed their man.

“There’s a lot of excitement in Ann Arbor. Hopefully it won’t take him long to get his offense and everything going, but a lot of people are excited.

By the way, Carson and his three teammates took home the top prize in the golf portion of the event.

Former Buckeye North head grid coach Rich Weiskircher was among the OSU contingent.

He is in his first season as a recruiting and academic counselor after pacing the sidelines in Brilliant and Marysville for 35 years, the final 32 at Marysville.

“After I retired Coach Tress offered me the job and it was too good of an opportunity to pass up,” he explained.

During his brief three-year stint at Buckeye North, before the consolidation formed Buckeye Local, Weiskircher’s teams went 28-2, including back-to-back 10-0 teams his first two seasons.

“The kids were tough. They were physical and would do anything they had to to win. We had a lot of talent and you can’t win without talent. That was a great place to start my coaching career.”
