Wuzinyurwallet tops qualifiers for stake final

Green-Maupin Kennel’s Wuzinyurwallet tops all qualifiers for Saturday afternoon’s final of the $65,000 West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Derby at Wheeling Island.

The Jim Grace-trained middle distance runner won all three of his qualifying races to accumulate a total of 45 points. He was the only greyhound to march through the early rounds unscathed.

Also qualifying for the 3/8 championship final are CTR Diamond Lil (Steubenville Kennel) and Kicken Kalindi (Haber Kennel), 33 points each; Trust Fund Baby (Green-Maupin Kennel), 31 points; Bombshell (Douglas Kennel), 30 points; Police Dog (Douglas Kennel) and Iruska Promise (Thorne-Abrahamson Kennel), 28 points each; and Jax Calvin (Thorne-Abrahamson Kennel), 26 points.

Just missing a spot in the final was Full Count, who also notched 26 points, but lost out in the tie-breaker.

From the rail out, the post positions for the final are: 1–CTR Diamond Lil; 2–Police Dog; 3–Kicken Kalindi; 4–Bombshell; 5–Wuzinyurwallet; 6–Iruska Promise; 7–Jax Calvin; 8–Trust Fund Baby.

Following are capsule looks at the eight finalists:

CTR Diamond Lil (1): At nearly 4 years old, she faces a challenge against these younger guns; trouble may loom since she prefers to race midtrack; won her second round race by 10 1/2 lengths from the eight hole.

Police Dog (2): Grade AA competitor has displayed a decent break and consistency with a pair of seconds and a third in the early rounds; also prefers the outer portion of the track.

Kicken Kalindi (3): Tri-state invader packs plenty of closing rush if she gets loose; with midtrack runners inside of her, she could get a good trip if she ducks under early.

Bombshell (4): Had a tough outing in the semifinals after posting back-to-back early speed wins in the first two rounds; the sprinter runs stronger on the lead, but may have a tough time getting it.

Wuzinyurwallet (5): Won his three qualifying rounds by a combined 30 lengths — a 10-length average margin of victory; if he breaks or clears the first turn close, go to the windows.

Iruska Promise (6): A surprise stake finalist, she prefers an inside post position; she needs to get out early to have any shot of catching the ticket.

Jax Calvin (7): Sprinter showed in the first round he can pop the box and will need to in order to have a chance in the final; faces tall task.

Trust Fund Baby (8): Winner of the WVGOBA Juvenile Sprint in April, she has the box speed to fire to the front; Wuzinyurwallet and Kicken Kalindi are the only two dogs in the race capable of tracking her down.

Director of Racing Ben Travis feels Wuzinyurwallet will make it to the winner’s circle on Saturday.

“Wuzinyurwallet and Bombshell side by side in the middle of the box could spell trouble for both. The biggest benefit here goes to the CTR Diamond Lil who could steal this race out of the one post position,” Travis said. “Kicken Kalindi will have to be close at the end to take advantage of her late speed if she is going to be a factor. In the end, though, I believe this race goes to Wuzinyurwallet.”

RACE ANALYSIS: This writer agrees with Travis — Wuzinyurwallet, despite a not so favorable post, will wear the championship blanket come late Saturday afternoon.

When Wuzinyurwallet finished third in the final of the WVGOBA Juvenile in April with a powerful closing rush, he looked like he could be scary in the longer 3/8 race. Although two of his early round wins were from the one box, he has been hitting the lid with consistency.

Beaten by littermate Trust Fund Baby in the Juvenile, Wuzinyurwallet will reverse the order this time around. Look for Trust Fund Baby to take the early lead before Wuzinyurwallet powers by her on the backstretch on his way to a convincing victory.

For entertainment purposes only, put Wuzinyurwallet on top with Trust Fund Baby, CTR Diamond Lil, Police Dog and Kicken Kalindi on the trifecta ticket.

In addition to Wuzinyurwallet, posting victories in the semifinal round Monday were Trust Fund Baby and JA’s Cloudy Day.

Wuzinyurwallet posting another dominating victory in his semifinal win by going box-to-wire in a 14-length romp in 38.11. Rounding out the trifecta ticket were CTR Diamond Lil and D’s Toast.

Trust Fund Baby closed in the stretch to post a 1 1/2-length victory in 39.16. Kicken Kalindi mounted a furious closing kick to get second while D’s Real Itchy was third.

JA’s Cloudy Day also posted a box-to-wire effort, winning by 2 lengths in 38.51. Police Dog was second while Princess Shaelee got up for third.
