Quick Strike breaks record

TK Quick Strike is making a strong case for All-America honors.

Only halfway through the 2008 racing season at Wheeling Island, the Charter Kennel distance dandy has already captured the Mountaineer Classic and broke the 3/8 track record. He also is second in wins at the track with 17.

On Wednesday, Quick Strike shattered his own 3/8 mark when he smoked a 37.20 in a box-to-wire 7-length romp. It was the third time he has etched his name in the record book this year.

Quick Strike broke DEA’s Magictouch’s track record of 37.40 on March 28 when he stopped the clock in 37.32. On May 12, he lowered the mark to 37.27.

“I knew he was fast enough to break the record this year, but to do it twice and now three times is amazing. It’s no fluke,” Charter Kennel trainer Rodney Cooley said. “I’ve been around a lot of greyhounds during my career and I have never had one this powerful. He is special.”

Breaking from the three hole Wednesday, Quick Strike was challenged early by Flying Wheeling before pulling away in the stretch. Flying Wheeling beat Quick Strike in his last two races.

“Flying Wheeling got him the last couple times, so Quick Strike owed him one,” Cooley noted.

Charter Kennel operator Cary Alsobrook feels Quick Strike is building an All-America resume.

“Breaking a track record three times is one thing, but to do it at Wheeling is more than special. Add this to the major stake (Mountaineer Classic) he won should make him a contender for All-American honors,” Alsobrook said. “In addition, he is close to being the track win leader which adds more to his credentials.”

Alsobrook also praised Cooley and Marty Tanner, who bred and raised Quick Strike.

“If a trainer ever had the handle to a greyhound’s ability to perform, then Rodney Cooley deserves to share in these accomplishments for preparing him to use his true ability. Marty Tanner also deserves credit for raising this tremendous greyhound,” Alsobrook said. “I don’t recall my using the term awesome on any of our greyhounds in the past, but this one time I am going to say awesome as loud as I can.”

In 31 starts this year at Wheeling, Quick Strike has 17 wins, 5 seconds, 3 thirds and 2 fourths – an 87 percent mark on the pay sheet.
