Semifinalists set in $100,000 Invitational stake

Three greyhounds remain undefeated after two rounds of the $100,000 Wheeling Island Invitational.

In the second round Wednesday, Flying Mancini (Flying Eagles-Miner Kennel), Flying Westover (Flying Eagles-Miner Kennel) and Kiowa WW Brother (Wayne Ward Kennel) posted their second consecutive victories to lead all qualifiers with 30 points each. Also capturing second round victories were Gable Twinkie and Flying Fabian.

The original field of 40 will be cut to 24 for Monday’s semifinal round. The championship final will be contested during the matinee card on Saturday, Oct. 18.

In addition to Flying Mancini, Flying Westover and Kiowa WW Brother, moving on to the semifinals are:

Makin Bakin and Kansas Buzzer, 25 points each; Tommy Commander and Hawk Harrelson, 20 points each; Gable Twinkie, 18 points; Braska Omni and Whiskey Spring, 16 points each; Flying Fabian, 15 points; Hallo Cruse Gold, AMF Far Far Away and Gable FX, 14 points each; Stat Sickem, Van Do, Pal WW Wendy and Seldomscenetears, 13 points each; Silver Jones and Bella Alexander, 11 points each; Soft Machine and BD’s Herby, 10 points each.

There is a tie for the final two spots between Cry Huron, Police Dog and Kiowa Estate Law. All three of the dogs had a third and a seventh in the first two rounds.

Following are capsule looks at the second round races:

Gable Twinkie closed from third in the stretch to catch frontrunner Kansas Buzzer by 1 1/2 lengths in 30.46. AMF Far Far Away came from way back to get third.

Flying Fabian, sent to post at 10-1, rushed out to an early lead and never looked back in romping to a 5-length victory in 30.45. Whiskey Spring and Police Dog round out the trifecta ticket.

Flying Mancini broke fifth in her race, but she rushed to the top around the first turn and cruised to a 9-length win in 30.56. Longshots Hawk Harrelson and Kiowa Estate Law ran second and third.

Flying Westover outrushed the field to the turn in posting an easy 3 1/2-length victory in 30.60. Makin Bakin was second while Seldomscenetears settled for third.

Kiowa WW Brother showed great determination, early and late, in winning his qualifying race by 1 length over Tommy Commander in 30.74. Gable FX got up for third.
