Schumacher making the most of his opportunity
Marcus Schumacher wasn’t highly recruited out of Monroe Central High School.
The 2011 graduate made a decision to give West Liberty, which showed the most interest, a chance. After all, it is the alma mater of his father, Andy, who was a football player for the Hilltoppers, too.
After red-shirting his freshman season, Schumacher has been on the fast track up the defensive depth chart since 2012.
“It’s really rewarding,” Schumacher said during a phone interview earlier this week. “I never really thought it would happen, in a way. I’ve been working my way into (the lineup) a little more each year and now it’s nice to be a contributing member of the team.”
Schumacher is the starting ‘SAM’ linebacker for the Hilltoppers and enjoyed one of his finest performances to date in last week’s 38-16 victory against West Virginia State.
The former Seminole standout was in on 10 tackles, which ranked second on the squad last week. He had seven solos and a sack of 7 yards.
Not a bad day’s work. But, Schumacher wasn’t totally pleased by it, either.
“I feel like I am my biggest critic,” Schumacher said. “Ten tackles isn’t enough. But, give credit to the defensive line for allowing me, and the other linebackers, to get up there and make some plays. We have to continue to do that and get better.”
For the season, Schumacher ranks second on the Toppers with 27 tackles. His two sacks are a team high. He’s also broken up a pass.
“I think each week we’re getting better and better,” Schumacher said. “We’re working out the kinks we had in the first game and it’s starting to come along a lot better. We’ve been practicing with a lot of energy.”
Schumacher and the rest of the Hilltoppers’ defense are preparing for a Concord team that’s averaging 48 points and 563 yards a week.
“They’re a really good team,” Schumacher said. “They have a lot of athletes. We feel like we’ve got a gameplan to slow down their offensive attack. We know the schedule is going to get tougher. We just have to keep working and take it one game at a time.”
