OFF THE TEE: Jefferies, Vannoy earn all-conference accolades

Area high school golf has been on the upswing for the last several years in the Ohio Valley.

It’s clearly evident, too.

How?

Just take a look at the number of players who are playing – and contributing – to teams at the collegiate level.

Three are products were recently named to their respective all-conference teams because of their performances in the conference tournaments held this month.

Two of the three were actually prep teammates and are now teammates again.

St. Clairsville graduates Adam Jefferies (Class of 2013) and Seth Vannoy (Class of 2014) were named first-team all-conference after finishing in the top five for Alderson-Broaddus University.

Jefferies – for the second straight season – was second overall at the G-MAC Championship held at Four Bridges Country Club in Liberty Township, Ohio.

Jefferies, who was the Belmont Hills Country Club Champion last summer, posted a three-round score of 235, which was second strokes off the pace.

Vannoy finished with a three-day score of 245, which placed him fifth overall and also on the first-team all-GMAC.

As a team, the Battlers finished second in the tournament, trailing Trevecca Nazarene by just a single shot.

On the women’s side of the equation, Martins Ferry graduate Kaitlyn Bliss earned a spot on the Mountain East Conference’s second team. She plays for West Liberty University.

The MEC passes out its honors based on how players finish in three designated events throughout the season.

Bliss led the Hilltoppers in the Southern Regional event, finishing fifth with a score of 166.

River High School grad Samantha Knowlton, who is a senior at West Liberty, was named to the honorable mention all-MEC squad.

Wheeling Jesuit’s Kasey Frazier was named the MEC Player of the Year.

OUE GOLFERS CONTINUE

TO SHINE

The Ohio University Eastern golf team continued to inch closer to the Ohio Regional Campus Conference title by winning yet another event.

The Panthers captured the Hawthorne Hills tournament, which was hosted by OSU-Lima, set the pace thanks to posting a 303, which is their lowest mark of the season.

Union Local grad Trevor Mudrak once again led the way. He not only led OUE, but he led the field, capturing medalist honors with a round of 72. Steubenville Central grad Thad Schrickel carded a 74, while Buckeye Trail grads Justin Wilson (75) and Austin Warehime (81) rounded out the scoring for the Panthers.

OUE was scheduled to be in action this weekend in Akron and Newark.

LOCAL?GOLD?INFO SOUGHT

Off The Tee golf section is back again and will once again run twice during the week throughout the spring and summer.

As I try to make this column as much about local golf as possible, I need your help. If you’re having a scramble, we want to hear about it. If you have results of a league, we want to hear about those, too. If you know of just something interesting happening in golf, we want that info as well. Don’t forget about area natives who are playing golf collegiately. Feel free to send information on those as well.

Basically, if it’s local golf related, feel free to submit it because we want to hear about it.
