OFF THE TEE: OUE wins ORCC tourney title to finish sweep

It’s now official.

The Ohio University Eastern men’s golf team has made history. The Panthers claimed their first Ohio Regional Campus Conference Tournament title last weekend by overtaking Miami Hamilton on the final day of competition.

OUE, which is coached by Steve Luckhardt, finished with a second-round score of 326, which, which was 14 shots better than Hamilton, which posted a 311 in the opening round.

Along with the team title, OUE also produced the tournament’s individual champion in Union Local graduate Trevor Mudrak, who shot a 151 for two days and drained a 22-foot birdie putt on the 36th hole to give himself the medalist honor.

“That final putt says a lot about the kind of competitor that Trevor is,” Luckhardt said. “He basically willed the putt in the hole to finish as medalist.”

Mudrak was one of three OUE players in the event’s top 10. Buckeye Trail grad Austin Warehime was seventh with a 159. Thad Schrickel finished 10th overall with a 160.

During the final round of the event, the top three players were obviously steady, but Buckeye Trail grad Justin Wilson posted an 80, which was nine shots better than his first-round total.

Bridgeport grad Jonathan Kreiter rounded out the scoring for the Panthers with a 176.

“I couldn’t be prouder of a group of young men,” Luckhardt said. “They worked hard and improved throughout the season, always represented the school in a first-class manner, and finished the season as champions.”
