Valley Hospice sets Whispered Wishes scramble
For years, Valley Hospice’s Whispered Wishes program has been granting end-of-life wishes to its patients.
From wedding ceremonies, to Mother’s Day gifts, to things as simple, yet important, as purchasing kerosene during the winter for a veteran patient, Whispered Wishes has meant much to many.
”The Whispered Wishes Program provides wonderful gifts to our patients and their families,” said Cynthia Bougher, chief executive officer of Valley Hospice. ”We depend on the generosity of our community and the proceeds from our golf scramble to keep this program going.”
This year’s event, the 8th annual, is slated for Monday, Aug. 17 at Steubenville Country Club. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with a shotgun start at 9:30. Lunch and dinner will be provided, along with drinks throughout the day.
The top three teams earn cash prizes ($500, first place; $300, second place; $200, third place). Prizes will also be awarded for longest putt and longest drive

Shane Shines in Juniors Event
Martins Ferry’s Joel Shane carded an 84 Thursday in First National Bank Junior Golf Tour action at Carroll Meadows Golf Club in Carrollton.
Shane participated in the Boys’ 16-18 Division, where Buckeye Trail’s Will Davis fired a 90.
River’s Mikayla Newman had a 104 in the Girls’ 16-16 Division, while Martins Ferry’s Luke Krol recorded an 89 in Boys’ 13-15 Division play.
Rylie Smith, from Buckeye Trail scored 56 in Girls’ 13-15 Division action and St. Clairsville’s Will Foster carded a 61 in the Boys’ 12 and Under group.
20th Annual BMAC
Golf Classic
The 20th annual BMAC Mountaineer Golf Classic is scheduled for Monday at the Moundsville Country Club.
The event gets underway with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.
This year’s honoree will be Moundsville native and former West Virginia University athletic director Ed Pastilong, who will also participate in the outing. His guidance was instrumental in establishing BMAC and he is a long-time supporter and advocate of BMAC.
All proceeds from the event fund BMAC’s Upper Ohio Valley Endowed Athletic Scholarship. This year’s recipient is Steubenville’s Shaq Petteway. Previous recipients have been Alyssa DeSantis (Steubenville); Zach Cooper (Weirton); Liz Repella (Steubenville) and Dominic Prezzia (St. Clairsville).
The cost is $75 per golfer or $300 per team. There will be skill prizes as well as raffles. The event will be divided into two divisions – an Open and a Corporate.
Froehlich’s of Steubenville will cater the event. The post-event dinner is being opened up to the public. The cost is $20 per person.

Belmont Hills Junior Tournament
The annual junior tournament will be held on Monday, July 27 at Belmont Hills Country Club. The event will feature divisions for boys and girls, including ages 17-18, 15-16 and 13-14 for boys; 16-18 and 13-15 for girls. The event will begin at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start. The top three finishers in each age group, for boys and girls, will receive an award. The entry fee is $30 with checks being made payable to Barnesville Golf Parents. Lunch will be provided for all tournament contestants and available for purchase for all spectators. Carts will be available for spectators, but they must remain on the cart path.

A golf scramble In Memory of Mario Veneri is being sponsored by the Powhatan American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Youth Fund. This is the second one, the first was in memory of Marvin Brown. The date is Saturday, July 25 with shotgun start at 9 a.m., at Horseshoe Bend golf course in Armstrong Mills.The entry fee is $200 per team, which includes cart, food, and refreshments. Team are encouraged to pre-register to ensure team entry. Cash prizes for the top three teams will be awarded. Door prizes and raffles and other events will be held. The Ohio Valley Wrestling Officials Association will hold its golf scramble on Saturday, Aug. 8 at Cadiz Country Club. The event will begin at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start.
The cost is $220 for a four-person team and that includes golf, cart, prizes, skins game and dinner. There will be special skill prizes for long drive, longest putt and closest to the pin. There are sponsorship opportunities available, too.

The fifth annual Amanda Rosepapa Memorial Foundation golf scramble is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 1.
The event will be a four-person scramble at Horseshoe Bend Golf Course in Armstrong Mills and the entry fee is $200 per team. The cost includes golf, cart, lunch and beverages. There will be prizes for longest drive, longest putt and closest to the pin.
The proceeds of the event will benefit the OVAC softball scholarship and go toward starting a ‘second chance fund’ for nursing students at Belmont College. Registrations are available by contacting Anita Day at (740) 676-0366 or on Facebook through the Amanda Rosepapa Memorial Foundation page.
