Doyle, Schrimp pocket MEC CC honors last week

Cross country has been one of the strongest sports in the area for many years.

Wheeling Jesuit has been able to capitalize on that.

The Cardinals’ program, which is led by former Wheeling Park standout Ricky Moore, is led by numerous former Ohio Valley Athletic Conference standouts.

They were on full display at last week’s Mountain East Conference Championship at Bridgeport, W.Va.

Former Wheeling Park standout Albert Schrimp claimed the overall title with a time of 27:49. He won by 33 seconds and was named MEC Runner of the Year for his efforts.

St. John Central product Sam Foster, who started his collegiate career at Wake Forest, finished 24th for the Cardinals in 30:27.

Another former Irish runner – Fallon Doyle – is making her presence felt on the female side. Doyle, who was a four-time all-Ohioan in cross country, earned another honor last week, pocketing MEC Freshman of the Year. She ran 25:11 to finish fifth.

Oak Glen product Kelsey Chambers was the MEC runnerup in 24:22 to earn all-conference honors.

Jenna Furr, who ran for Caldwell, finished 17th at the MEC in a time of 26:52.

The Cardinals are off this weekend before opening the postseason with regional action.

FOOTBALL

Division I – FBS

JERRID MARHEFKA, Ohio – St. Clairsville grad recorded his first collegiate catch last week in a loss at Buffalo for 47 yards.

NAJEE MURRAY, Kent State – Steubenville product recorded two tackles in the Golden Flashes’ loss to Bowling Green.

CONNOR ARLIA, Kent State – Madonna graduate recorded two tackles in the loss to Bowling Green.

FCS

MARK DODD, Lafayette – Linsly product had three tackles in a loss to Holy Cross last week.

DIVISION II

MATT KINNICK, West Virginia State – St. Clairsville grad was 18-of-30 for 188 yards and two touchdowns in a win against Glenville State.

COREY ERNEST, West Liberty – St. Clairsville product started once again at left guard in the Hilltoppers’ loss to Notre Dame College.

MIKE BERARDI, West Liberty – John Marshall grad started at center for the Hilltoppers in last week’s loss.

MARCUS SCHUMACHER, West Liberty – Monroe Central product had one tackle in the Hilltoppers’ loss.

DAREE GOODWIN, West Liberty – Wheeling Park product caught 10 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown in last week’s loss.

TANNER WRIGHT, Glenville State – River product punted twice for a 46-yard average in the loss to W.Va. State.

ZACH PHILLIPS, Gannon – Wheeling Park product rushed seven times for 25 yards and scored his first collegiate touchdown.

GEREMY PAIGE, Gannon – Wheeling Park graduate had six tackles in a win against Gannon.

JESSE STOUDT, Tiffin – Barnesville product had nine tackles, including seven solo in a loss to Hillsdale.

DIVISION III

DALTON SECHREST, Marietta – Beallsville product had nine tackles, which was second on the team in last week’s loss.

JACOB CLARK, Muskingum – Shadyside grad started at left guard for the Muskies in their loss.

JONATHAN CARLIER, Waynesburg – Martins Ferry product recorded four tackles in a senior day victory last week.

LESHAWN LUKE, Mt. Union – Steubenville grad had one tackle in last week’s win at Wilmington.

DASHON REDMAN, Mt. Union – Steubenville grad had three tackles in last week’s win, which was the school’s 100th straight regular-season victory.

MIKE FURDA, Mt. Union – Indian Creek product had one tackle last week in the victory.

ZACH HERRINGTON, Mt. Union – Steubenville Central had one catch for 8 yards in last week’s win.

NICK ASTURI, Muskingum – River graduate rushed 10 times for 55 yards, which led the Muskies last week.

DAULTON FREEMAN, Bethany – St. Clairsville graduate had six tackles and an interception in just his second start for the Bison.

CROSS COUNTRY

HANNAH SURFACE, Alderson-Broaddus – East Richland Christian grad finished 23rd in the GMAC Championship last week in 25:47.

JAMIE TRUCHAN, West Liberty – Martins Ferry grad crossed in 33rd place in the MEC Championship.

LEAH FIGURSKI, West Liberty – Buckeye Local graduate earned all-MEC honors by finishing 16th in the conference meet last weekend in a time of 26:46.

SWIMMING

KATELYN CURNES, Wheeling Jesuit – Wheeling Park grad swam a leg on the Cardinals’ winning 200 medley relay team in its last outing.

WRESTLING

CHARLIE KEENAN, Kent State – Steubenville grad finished 1-1 in the Kent State wrestle offs held last week. He was a 5-0 winner by decision and was pinned.

DOMINIC PREZZIA, Ohio State – St. Clairsville grad wrestled in the 174-pound wrestle off Thursday night.
