OFF THE TEE: Oglebay Park Golf Club begins 2016 season
The Oglebay Park Golf Club began its 2016 season last Sunday with the Allen Kage Memorial Snowbird Tournament, presented by the 19th hole.
The tournament was reduced to a 9-hole event and had a field of 54 golfers playing the front 9 at Crispin Center Golf Course.
Winning the medal division was Paul Kurtz with a round of 36. He edged Mike Wetzel by a stroke. Bryan Myers, Joe Doerr and Shane Livingston both checked in with a 38.
Richard Humphrey and Andrew Biggert posted rounds of 39. Greg Woodfin and Todd Snedeker signed for 42s, while Dave Sims rounded out the top 10 with a 43.
In the handicap division, Neal Chase prevailed with a 38. Jim Bittengle was second with a round of 34. Rich Colley and Tom Mitchell both checked in with rounds of 35. Dave Slonaker and Gary Mercer were next in line with rounds of 36.
Rounding out the top 10, with rounds of 38s, were B.J. Widmor, Jim Dailer, Rod Lydik and John Green.
The closest to the pins were won by Richard Humphrey (No. 2), Jim Dailer (No. 5) and Shane Livingston (No. 7).
COLLEGE GOLF
Wheeling Jesuit and West Liberty are both off to solid starts for their spring seasons.
The Cardinals’ women finished 10th at the NC4K Classic held in Blacklick, which is just east of Columbus. Cardinals’ leader Kasey Frazier earned the medalist honors in the event, firing a 2-over round. had 16 pars and two bogeys in her round.
All told, Jesuit checked in with a 341. Included in their score was an 84 from Bridget Lynn, an 87 from Leah Baughman and 96s from both Kenaida Mills and Marci Schneider to go along with the 74 posted by Frazier.
The West Liberty and Wheeling Jesuit men both took part in the Oglebay Resort Intercollegiate Tournament held over two days at the Palmer Course.
The Hilltoppers finished fifth with a score of 602. They were led by Matt Iceton (148), Alston Spears (150), Cory Hoshor (153) and Tanner Stoffer (155).
The Cardinals, meanwhile, posted a 613. Leading them were 15th place finishes from both Nolan Tisch and Garrett Emch. Both shot 151. Also included in the Cardinals’ scoring were Gian Franco Morassutti finished 30th overall. Eric Dargis and Ryian Burson rounded out the scoring five.
Last Sunday, the Hilltoppers’ women’s team took part in the Ohio Valley University Women’s Invitational held at Marietta Country Club. West Liberty finished sixth with a 778. Sarah Adamowski led the way for West Liberty with a 165.
Martins Ferry product Kaitlyn Bliss was second for the West Liberty women with a two-day score of 184. She shot rounds of 95 and 89.
Catie Wells (209), Haley Spurlock (220) and Allyson Johnson (248) rounded out the West Liberty women’s scoring.
SENECAVILLE SENIOR LEAGUE
There will be an organizational meeting for the league on Monday, April 25 at 10 a.m. at the Secrest Center in Senecaville. Practice sessions will be held on May 2 and 9 with league play starting on May 16 at Robbins Ridge. For more information, please call Greg at 740-624-1651.

The fifth annual Alane Skramstad Memorial four-man golf scramble will be held on May 14 at BecWood Hills, beginning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The cost is $60 per player, which includes food, beverages and skill contests. Money raised will be donated to cancer scholarships and John Marshall baseball. There will be two flights. The first flight will pay top three places, while the second flight will pay the top two places. THE BELLAIRE Sons of Italy Lodge will hold its 17th annual golf scramble on Monday, June 6 at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course. The event, which will benefit the Alzheimers & Coole’s Anemia Charities, will begin at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start. The entry fee is $200 per four-man team. THE THOMAS R. Dowler Memorial Golf Classic will be held on Monday, May 23 at Belmont Hills Country Club. The event will begin with a shot-gun start at noon, but lunch and registration will occur at 11 a.m. Dinner will be served after the round. The proceeds of the event go to the Thomas R. Dowler Fund which supports students, faculty, programs and facilities at Belmont College. The cost for a team is $500 or $125 per person. There are hole sponsorship packages available, too.
THE YMCA/Bobby Baker Memorial Golf Scramble will be held on Friday, May 6 at Belmont Hills Country Club. It will begin with a shot-gun start at 1 p.m. The entry fee is $75 per player or $300 per team, which includes golf, cart, dinner and refreshments. The top two teams will be awarded prizes. The deadline to enter is April 22. All proceeds of the event will benefit youth sports at the YMCA. For more information, call Curtis at 304-242-8086.
THE FLUSHING Masonic Lodge scholarship scramble is slated for May 21 at the Cadiz Country Club. This is an open tournament, but is limited to 22 paid teams. At 11:30 a.m. there will be hot dogs and registration. Shot gun start is at 12:30 p.m. Entry fee is $65 per person and includes a steak dinner and awards. There will also be door prizes and beverages on the course a select locations. Proceeds benefit two $500 scholarships to both Union Local and Harrison Central high school students.
