Wheeling Park Golf Club begins 2016 season

The season opened earlier this month with a pair of events.

The Undo’s sponsored event was held on April 6 with Roger Kupfer prevailing with a round of 37. Terry Younkins also finished with a 37. George Melnik (38), Bruno DeCrease (39) and Robbie Evans (39) rounded out the top five in the medal scoring.

In the handicap scoring, Joe Kosar posted a 34 to win. Don DeWitt was second with a 35. The balance of the top five included Mike DeSantis (36), Matt DeSantis (37) and Dave Stauver (37).

The Bethani’s Bouquets-sponsored event was held on April 13. Rich Colley captured the crown with a 34. Art Lighner was second with a 34. Kupfer was third with a 35, while Bob Green (39) and George Melnik (40) rounded out the top five.

In the handicap scoring, DeWitt was the winner with a 33. He was a shot better than Chris Bommer. Bill Piccard (36) and Younkins (37) checked in in third and fourth, respectively. There was a tie for fifth between Ted Koski and Dick Moore at 37.

NCAA DIVISION II

Both West Liberty and Wheeling Jesuit landed three players on the all Mountain East Conference squad, which was announced last week.

Representing the Hilltoppers were first-teamer Matt Iceton, second-teamers Cory Hoshor and Alston Spears.

The Cardinals were led by first-teamer Nolan Tisch. They also had a pair of third-teamer in Ryan Burson, who is an East Liverpool graduate, and Eric Dargis.

Former Wheeling Park standout Cole Hand, who is now playing for West Virginia University, signed for rounds of 84 and 79 during the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate held at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course.

St. Clairsville graduate Adam Jeffries, who now plays at Alderson-Broaddus, finished tied for 75th in the Purgatory Regional held at the Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville, Ind. Jeffries posted rounds of 79 and 80, respectively.

St. Clairsville grad Seth Vannoy, who also plays for A-B, finished with rounds of 80 and 83, respectively.

St. Clairsville product Zach Keylor, who now plays at Walsh University in Canton, posted rounds of 83 and 80, respectively.

Buckeye Trail graduate Jed Burga posted rounds of 87 and 91 in the event. He plays for Ohio Valley University in Parkersburg.

OUE GOLFERS START STRONG

The Ohio University Eastern golf team began its season in Chillicothe last weekend in less than ideal weather conditions, but still managed to shoot a 330, which was two shots better than Kent State Tuscarawas for the title.

Union Local product Trevor Mudrak led the way for the Panthers with a 77, while Bridgeport product Jonathan Kreiter posted a 79. Justin Wilson and Austin Warehime – both of whom went to Buckeye Trail – shot 84 and 90, respectively.

ACE

GARRET FOX of Gibbon Glade, Pa. aced the 152-yard 10th hole at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course on April 13. He used an 8-iron for his shot, which was witnessed by Ethan Estes.

SENECAVILLE SENIOR LEAGUE

There will be an organizational meeting for the league on Monday, April 25 at 10 a.m. at the Secrest Center in Senecaville. Practice sessions will be held on May 2 and 9 with league play starting on May 16 at Robbins Ridge. For more information, please call Greg at 740-624-1651.

THE FIFTH annual Alane Skramstad Memorial four-man golf scramble will be held on May 14 at BecWood Hills, beginning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The cost is $60 per player, which includes food, beverages and skill contests. Money raised will be donated to cancer scholarships and John Marshall baseball. There will be two flights. The first flight will pay top three places, while the second flight will pay the top two places. THE BELLAIRE Sons of Italy Lodge will hold its 17th annual golf scramble on Monday, June 6 at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course. The event, which will benefit the Alzheimers & Coole’s Anemia Charities, will begin at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start. The entry fee is $200 per four-man team. The cost includes golf, cart, refreshments on the course and dinner after the round. The top three places will receive a cash prize. For more information, please contact Phil Pata at 740-695-0691.

THE THOMAS R. Dowler Memorial Golf Classic will be held on Monday, May 23 at Belmont Hills Country Club. The event will begin with a shot-gun start at noon, but lunch and registration will occur at 11 a.m. Dinner will be served after the round. The proceeds of the event go to the Thomas R. Dowler Fund which supports students, faculty, programs and facilities at Belmont College. The cost for a team is $500 or $125 per person. There are hole sponsorship packages available, too.

THE YMCA/Bobby Baker Memorial Golf Scramble will be held on Friday, May 6 at Belmont Hills Country Club. It will begin with a shot-gun start at 1 p.m. The entry fee is $75 per player or $300 per team, which includes golf, cart, dinner and refreshments. The top two teams will be awarded prizes. The deadline to enter is April 22. All proceeds of the event will benefit youth sports at the YMCA. For more information, call Curtis at 304-242-8086.

THE FLUSHING Masonic Lodge scholarship scramble is slated for May 21 at the Cadiz Country Club. This is an open tournament, but is limited to 22 paid teams. At 11:30 a.m. there will be hot dogs and registration. Shot gun start is at 12:30 p.m. Entry fee is $65 per person and includes a steak dinner and awards. There will also be door prizes and beverages on the course a select locations. Proceeds benefit two $500 scholarships to both Union Local and Harrison Central high school students. THE 25TH annual Soup Kitchen Scramble will be held at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course on Friday, May 6. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. All of the proceeds from the event will benefit the Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling. The entry fee is $75 per person until April 22 and at that time the cost increases to $85. The cost includes lunch, golf, cart, beverages on the course and dinner after the round.
