Inaugural Becca Memorial part of OVGA
The Ohio Valley Golf Association will soon begin another season.
And when it cranks up its new season, a new event will be on the schedule.
The inaugural Charlie Becca Memorial Scramble will be held on May 21 and 22 at Becwood Hills Golf Course. The entry fee is set at $90 per player, which includes a cart and golf on both days of the event. A light lunch will be provided each day.
The event will consist of individual and best-ball compeititions within flights. The field is limited to amateurs only and the flights will be broken down into championship, first flight (handicap of 7+), seniors (ages 50 and over) and junior (ages 17 and under).
Tee times will be set for the opening day of the event, but the final round will be played with a pro start.
Prizes for the event will be awarded in Hole N’ Run gift certificates.

WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB
The Elm Grove Eagles #1891 event was held on May 4. Art Lightner fired a 33 to win the 9-hole event. Roger Kupfer (35) was second. Rich Colley finished third with a 36 and Bob Green was fourth with a 36. Rounding out the top five were Junior Anderson and George Melnik, who tied with a round of 37.
Jim Kupfer won the handicap scoring event with a 28. Mike Perring was five shots back, while Terry Yonkins was third with a 34. Doug Miller finished fourth with a 34. A three-way tie rounded out the top five. Included were Dick Moore, Mike Mazure and Robbie Evans. All of whom posted a 35.
On May 8, the club hosted its Doris L. Kinney Memorial bestball/scramble event. The duo of Mel Hand and Ron Heatherly prevailed with a round of 61. Lightner and Roger Kupfer finished second with an identical score of 61. Rick and Ryan Richmond were third with a 66. Gary Mercer and Chris Bommer finished with a 68. Clark Sambuco and Josh Foose posted a 72 to round out the top five.
In the handicap scoring, Tony Campbell and Tom Mitchell won with a score of 56. That was four shots clear of Paul Alig Sr. and Paul Alig Jr. Dave Stauver and Dick Moore finished with a 60 and were in third. Evans and Miller were fourth with a 60. McLaughlin and Nick Klamut also finished with a 60.
COLLEGE GOLF
For the second time in four years, Wheeling Jesuit will be represented at the NCAA Division II Women’s National Golf Tournament. Kasey Frazier finished seventh in the recent super regional event to punch her ticket to the national tournament, which will be held in Denver from May 16-21.
Frazier moved up the leaderboard during the final round thanks to an even-par round of 72. She stood in ninth place after two rounds. The New Jersey native fired rounds of 79 and 73 to begin the event.

THE ANNUAL Amanda Rosepapa Memorial Golf Scramble is planned for Saturday, Aug. 13 at Bec-Wood Hills Golf Course in Rayland. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. and the entry fee is $50 per player or $200 per team. That fee includes golf, cart, lunch. Registration for the event will run from 7:30 a.m. until the tournament begins. Sponsorship opportunities are also available for $50 for a hole sponsor. The proceeds of the event go to the Amanda Rosepapa Memorial Foundation, which supports an OVAC softball scholarship. THE BELLAIRE Sons of Italy Lodge will hold its 17th annual golf scramble on Monday, June 6 at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course. The event, which will benefit the Alzheimers & Coole’s Anemia Charities, will begin at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start. The entry fee is $200 per four-man team. THE THOMAS R. Dowler Memorial Golf Classic will be held on Monday, May 23 at Belmont Hills Country Club. The event will begin with a shot-gun start at noon, but lunch and registration will occur at 11 a.m. Dinner will be served after the round. The proceeds of the event go to the Thomas R. Dowler Fund which supports students, faculty, programs and facilities at Belmont College. The cost for a team is $500 or $125 per person. There are hole sponsorship packages available, too.
THE YMCA/Bobby Baker Memorial Golf Scramble will be held on Friday, May 6 at Belmont Hills Country Club. It will begin with a shot-gun start at 1 p.m. The entry fee is $75 per player or $300 per team, which includes golf, cart, dinner and refreshments. The top two teams will be awarded prizes. THE FLUSHING Masonic Lodge scholarship scramble is slated for May 21 at the Cadiz Country Club. This is an open tournament, but is limited to 22 paid teams. At 11:30 a.m. there will be hot dogs and registration. Shot gun start is at 12:30 p.m. Entry fee is $65 per person and includes a steak dinner and awards. There will also be door prizes and beverages on the course a select locations. Proceeds benefit two $500 scholarships to both Union Local and Harrison Central high school students. THE 25TH annual Soup Kitchen Scramble will be held at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course on Friday, May 6. THE OHIO River Ball Council Boy Scouts of America will hold its annual scramble on Thursday, May 19 at Speidel Golf Course at Oglebay Park. The event will begin at 12:30 p.m. with a shotgun start. Lunch will be served, starting at 11 a.m. A dinner catered by Undo’s will follow the round. The top three teams will receive cash prizes. The cost is $400 per team and that includes golf, cart, meals, beverages and skill competitions.
THE AMERICAN Legion Bellaire Post 52 will host the annual Tom Donahue Memorial Golf Scramble on Saturday, July 9 at BecWood Golf Course. The entry fee is $50 per player and it start at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start. The event is open is open to the public.
