OVAC products shine in MEC meet

The Mountain East Conference Track and Field Championship held last weekend in Buckhannon at West Virginia Wesleyan University took on the feel of an Ohio Valley meet as several former area performers had strong showings.

Former Bridgeport High standout Cody Frey, who runs for Notre Dame College, notched his third consecutive MEC championship in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles. He turned in an impressive 53.04, which is a NCAA provisional qualifying mark. That means Frey must play the waiting game to see if he earns a trip to the NCAA Division II national meet, which is slated for May 25-28 in Bradenton, Fla.

Frey also finished fifth in the 110 high hurdles in 15.15.

Martins Ferry grad Anthony Phillips wrapped up his collegiate career with a bronze medal in the 400 intermediate hurdles in 53.80 and a fourth-place finish in the 110 high hurdles in 14.92.

Another former Purple Rider, Jack Fitch, joined Phillips as two of the legs on the Cardinals’ 4×1 team that finished secodn in the meet with a 42.34. Fitch also competed on the 4×4 team that finished second in 3:21.58.

Wheeling Park grad Albert Schrimp was second in the 10,000 in 32:44.60 and third in the 5,000-meters with a time of 15:47.92.

Beallsville product Hayley Campbell had a strong meet in the field for Wheeling Jesuit. She was the champion of the shot put with a mark of 44-0 1/2, runnerup in the discus at 141-ft-4 and second in the hammer throw with an NCAA provisional mark of 170-ft-11.

St. John Central grad Fallon Doyle, competing for Wheeling Jesuit, finished fifth in the in the 1500 meter run in 5:06.06. She was also sixth in the 5,000 at 19:34.00.

Another former Irish performer, Lacee Dobrovich, completed her collegiate career with a fourth-place finish in the 100 high hurdles in 15.39 and eighth place in the 400 hurdles in 73.43.

Indian Creek grad Kristen Shimko placed fifth in the women’s discus

John Marshall grad Alexis Montes paced West Liberty in the field. She won the javelin with a mark of 156-ft-3.

Brooke High product Ali Crawford, who competes for MEC champion West Virginia Wesleyan, won the title in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, posting times of 12.22 and 24.99, respectively. She also ran a leg on the winning 4×1 and 4×4 squads.

Oak Glen alumni had good showings, too. Kelsey Chambers, who competes for Wheeling Jesuit, was named the conference’s female athlete of the year after she captured the gold medal in the 1500 meter run (4:50.66). She won silver in the 3000M steeplechase with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 11:02.69.

Alex Burch was the 400 meter dash champion in a time of 58.91. She was also fourth in the 200 at 25.47 for the Cardinals.

Ethan Delekta – who competes for West Liberty – won the MEC title in the discus with a throw of 145-ft-11. He was second in the hammer at 147-ft-8. He added five more points by finishing fourth in the javelin at 160-ft-5.

BASEBALL

Division I

MICHAEL GROVE, West Virginia – Wheeling Park product picked up his second career win and did so in impressive fashion against Maryland. He worked 6.2 innings and recorded 13 strikeouts, which tied his career high. That total also ranks second in the Big 12 this season.

ALEX STEPHENS, Morehead State – Linsly grad went 4-for-6 at the plate in a decisive win against Eastern Illinois. He had a RBI and swiped a base. For the series, he went 7-for-14.

COLTON COSS, Morehead State – Linsly grad had a two-run double in his only plate appearance in a win against Eastern Illinois.

MICHAEL JACOB, Toledo – St. Clairsville product picked up his second win of the season, working out of the bullpen. He went four innings, striking out three and walking one. He allowed just one run.

ANDREW KOWALO, Liberty – Wheeling Park grad had two hits and drove in three runs in his last three games for the Flames.

DIVISION II

D.J. BUSBY, West Liberty – St. Clairsville High product earned second-team all-MEC honors. He had a brilliant regular season, setting WLU records for hits (71), runs (46) and singles (63).

MARK SMYTH, West Liberty – Edison product was named second-team all-MEC after a 8-3 season. He threw nine complete games this season and finished with a 3.00 earned run average.

GREG STAGANI, West Liberty – Former Edison ace was named first-team all-MEC despite just a 6-4 regular-season record. He ranked second in the MEC with 81 strikeouts and fifth in ERA at 3.12.

LOGAN HUDSON, Wheeling Jesuit – Shadyside High product was honored at senior day last Sunday. He got the start in the opening game of the twinbill and suffered the loss, working four innings and allowing three earned runs.

CODY HUDSON, Wheeling Jesuit – Shadyside High graduate came on in relief of his older brother and worked the final five innings. He was charged with nine runs, but none were earned. He was named honorable mention all-MEC. He made 12 appearances and owned a team-best 1.97 earned run average.

DILLON SUNNAFRANK, Wheeling Jesuit – Cambridge product was named all-MEC after he led the Cardinals in eight offensive categories, including hits (48), doubles (13), home runs (6), runs (22) and RBI (30).

SAM VINCENZO, St. Thomas Aquinas – St. Clairsville graduate finished his first season at the New York-based school with a 3-1 record and a 2.52 earned run average.

DIVISION III

SPENCER BADIA, Baldwin-Wallace – Bellaire High product had an impressive final weekend in the regular season. He was 8-for-12 with a home run, double, four runs scored and two RBIs.

SOFTBALL

KATIE ELLZY, Robert Morris – Harrison Central product wrapped up her freshman regular season with her first seven-inning shutout last weekend against Fairleigh Dickinson. She allowed four hits and a walk, while striking out four. Ellzy was named second-team all-Northeast Conference earlier this week. Ellzy ranks amongst the NEC leaders in wins (12), earned run average (2.96) and opposing batting average (.238). She owns five wins in the conference.

JESSE MACHOVINA, Ohio State – St. Clairsville product came off the bench to record a pinch-hit double in last Saturday’s 9-7 victory over Michigan State.
