Soukup Scramble winners announced
The fifth annual Butch Soukup Saints Club Golf Scramble was held last weekend at Belmont Hills Country Club.
Winning the event – with a score of 16-under, 56 – was the team of Ryan Mellott, Jason Balcar, Justin Clifford and Jim Hamilton. Finishing three shots behind were J.C. Thrash, Jeff Thrash, Zach Azallion and Matt Kreading. The third-place award went to Willie Burghy, Jared Burghy, Roy Swallie and John Martin.
The closest to the pin awards were claimed by Bryan Butler (No. 2), Chris Baugh (No. 7), Zach Azallion (No. 11) and Justin Clifford (No. 14).
The longest drives were claimed by Matthew Keading (No. 3) and Andy Rimer (No. 18).
Two teams recorded skins during the event. The second-place team posted one on No. 6, while the team of Bruce Poe, Andy Poe, Jack Ralston and Darren Dombrowski recorded one on No. 2.
OGLEBAY PARK GOLF CLUB
The second event of the season – the Ye Olde Alpha Spiedel Medal/Handicap – was held late last month.
The event drew 80 golfers for the 18-hole stroke play event, which was held on the Jones course.
Winning the overall crown was Mike Wetzel with a round of 69. He was two shots clear of Kyle Wensel’s 71 and four shots better than Bryan Myers’ 73. Rick Zandron finished with a 74 for fourth place, while Joe Doerr (76) and Joe Hartman (76) rounded out the top five.
The balance of the top 10 included Andrew Chlon (77), Paul Kurtz (77), Mike Wilson (77) and George Templin (77).
In the handicap division, Jeff Thrash prevailed with a 66. Tom Gaudino was second with a 67. Jim Mortakis, Bob Custer and Neal Chase rounded out the top five. All finished with 67.
The closest to the pin awards went to Randy Shephard (No. 4), Joe Hartman (No. 7), Jeff Thrash (No. 11) and Brad Mitchell (No. 15). The skins went to Shane Livingston (No. 4), Roger Waialae (No. 6), Jeff Thrash (No. 11), Bryan Myers (No. 12) and Greg Woodfin (No. 16).
BELMONT HILLS CC RESULTS
The annual Men’s 6-6-6 was held last weekend. The duo of Anthony Reasbeck and Todd Schambach won the first flight with a score of 64. Finishing second were Zach Azallion and J.C. Thrash, who also posted a 64..
The second flight championship went to Brian Delloma and Kevin Abel with a round of 69. Clay Wood and Dave Diosi finished second with a round of 70.
The overall title went to Reasbeck and Schambach, while Delloma and Abel were second.
Wood won the closest to the pin award, too.
WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB
The Sharpsky Printing event was held on April 27. Clark Sambuco prevailed in the 9-hole event with a round of 33. Mel Hand was second with a 34 and Art Lightner was third with a 36. Chris Bommer was fourth with a 37. A tie for fifth was between Bob Green, Rich Colley and Robbie Evans.
Jerry Daugherty won the handicap scoring with a round of 33. Paul Carney finished with a 35. Terry Younkins was third with a 35. George Melnik was fourth with a 35. A three-way tie for fifth was between Rick Diefenbaugh, Mike Perring and Joe Kosar.
The Kupfer Brothers Logging event was held on May 1. Lightner won by six shots with a 66. Bommer was second with a 72 and Sambuco finished with a 77 for third place. Colley and Bruno DeCrease rounded out the top five. Each posted an 80.
Tom Mitchell won the handicap scoring with a 66. Green was second with a 69 and Nick Klamut was third with a 69. Ted Koski posted a 73 and Steve Usenick had a 74.
COLLEGE GOLF
Ohio University Eastern cruised to another victory during last weekend’s ORCC event held at the Cadiz Country Club. The Panthers finished with a 318, which was 12 shots better than OU Chillicothe and 35 clear of OSU-Lima.
OUE was paced by UL graduate Trevor Mudrak, who was the tournament champion with a round of 75. Jonathan Kreiter, who played at Bridgeport, finished with a season-low 78. Buckeye Trail grad Justin Wilson finished with 82. Turner Provost, who is a St. Clairsville product, finished fourth on the squad with an 83.

The Bellaire Touchdown Club will be sponsoring its 10th annual golf outing on Saturday, June 25 at the Fairway River Links. The entry fee is $60 per person or $240 per a team of four. THE FIFTH annual Alane Skramstad Memorial four-man golf scramble will be held on May 14 at BecWood Hills, beginning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The cost is $60 per player, which includes food, beverages and skill contests. Money raised will be donated to cancer scholarships and John Marshall baseball. There will be two flights. The first flight will pay top three places, while the second flight will pay the top two places. THE BELLAIRE Sons of Italy Lodge will hold its 17th annual golf scramble on Monday, June 6 at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course. The event, which will benefit the Alzheimers & Coole’s Anemia Charities, will begin at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start. The entry fee is $200 per four-man team. THE THOMAS R. Dowler Memorial Golf Classic will be held on Monday, May 23 at Belmont Hills Country Club. The event will begin with a shot-gun start at noon, but lunch and registration will occur at 11 a.m. Dinner will be served after the round. The proceeds of the event go to the Thomas R. Dowler Fund which supports students, faculty, programs and facilities at Belmont College. The cost for a team is $500 or $125 per person. There are hole sponsorship packages available, too.
THE FLUSHING Masonic Lodge scholarship scramble is slated for May 21 at the Cadiz Country Club. This is an open tournament, but is limited to 22 paid teams. At 11:30 a.m. there will be hot dogs and registration. Shot gun start is at 12:30 p.m. Entry fee is $65 per person and includes a steak dinner and awards. There will also be door prizes and beverages on the course a select locations. Proceeds benefit two $500 scholarships to both Union Local and Harrison Central high school students. THE OHIO River Ball Council Boy Scouts of America will hold its annual scramble on Thursday, May 19 at Speidel Golf Course at Oglebay Park. The event will begin at 12:30 p.m. with a shotgun start. Lunch will be served, starting at 11 a.m. A dinner catered by Undo’s will follow the round. The top three teams will receive cash prizes. The cost is $400 per team and that includes golf, cart, meals, beverages and skill competitions.
THE AMERICAN Legion Bellaire Post 52 will host the annual Tom Donahue Memorial Golf Scramble on Saturday, July 9 at BecWood Golf Course. The entry fee is $50 per player and it start at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start. The event is open is open to the public.
