OFF THE TEE: Memorial Day event winners announced at BHCC
The Belmont Hills Country Club held its annual Memorial Day event last Monday.
The winning team, which shot a round of 61, included Bryan Woodford, Jamie Simon, John Vota and Rob Anderson.
Finishing second in the event, two shots behind the winners, were the teams of Dave Murphy, Mark Bukmir, Dave Wilson and Pat Estadt; Rennie Minor, Kaz Pata, Ernie Wilson and Nick Karras.
Closest to the pin prizes went to Dave Murphy and Lisa Simon.
DOWLER SCRAMBLE
The Thomas R. Dowler Memorial Classic Golf Scramble was held last month at Belmont Hillsl Country Club. The winning team was comprised of Steven Gretchen, Sonny Jacobs, Rennie Minor and Dave Reasbeck.
The event raises funds for the Thomas R. Dowler Fund, which benefits students at Belmont College.
“Mr. Dowler, former President of the Foundation Board, played an integral part in building the Belmont College Foundation, and his love of the college was evident to all those who knew him,” Vice President of Advancement and Marketing R.J. Konkoleski said in a press release. “We are so pleased to host this golf scramble in Mr. Dowler’s memory as the college’s way of continuing his legacy. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Mrs. Linda Dowler as well as all of our sponsors and volunteers who assisted with the event.”
PLAY IT AGAIN SPORTS
The event was held at Wheeling Park Golf Course, including a 36-hole championship medal and best-ball event.
Capturing the title is Dave Frey, who won by two shots. He finished with a 128, which included rounds of 62 and 66. Finishing second were Larry Lis Jr. and Jade Waligura. They both finished with rounds of 130. Thad Obecny II was fourth with a 132 and Jay Davis rounded out the top five with a 134.
The junior title went to Jacob Nickel, who finished with rounds of 67 and 66 for a 133. He was nine shots clear of Ryan Payne, who finished with a 142. Kyle Wensel finished third with a 144 and Austin Lis was fourth with a 146.
Tom Powell captured the senior division with a 141. He was a shot better than Bruno DeCrease with a 142. Bob Green and Bill Glitch finished with a 148. Greg Woodfin and Jim Ennis both finished with a 156, which rounded out the top five.
Gary Schrickel was the champion of the super senior with a two-day total of 135. Tom Stillmak finished second with a two-day score of 136. Roger Kupfer was third with a 137.
In the best-ball portion of the event, the duo of Andrew Strope and Jade Waligura won the best-ball championship in a 3-hole playoff against Frey and Gary Schrickel. Nickel and Obecny were third with a 120.
John Becca and Stillmak teamed for the victory in the senior best ball.
WHEELING PARK
GOLF CLUB
The Johnson Boiler Works event was held on May 15. Art Lightner prevailed with a round of 67. Ron Heatherly finished second with a 73, while Nick Klamut was third with a 76. Rich Colley and Bob Green rounded out the top five with 77 and 78, respectively.
Dick Moore won the handicap scoring with a round of 66. Bob Hicks finished with a round of 68. Bruno DeCrease had a 71.
The Wharton’s Auto Smith event was held on May 25. Lightner won that event, too. He shot a 33, which was three shots better than Mel Hand. Tony Coppa finished with a 36 and third place. Matt DeSantis was the champion of the handicap scoring with a 32. He was two shorts clear of Bob Hicks.
WHEELING COUNTRY CLUB
The annual event, which utilized two best balls of four, was won by the foursome of Tim Roberts, Bob Furka, Jacob Nickell and Teddy McDonald. That squad finished with a score of 103, which was 22 under par. Jim Squibb, Jim Kepner, Jim Jorden and Jared Jorden finished second with a score of 105, which was 20 under.
There was a tie for third place. The team of Brian Valentine, James Wallace, Chris Keidaisch and R.J. Zitzelsberger and Ron Stephens, Alex Stephens, Justin Ferrell and Brad Archer both finished with rounds of 106.
The long putt made was by Wes Nickell on No. 10, while Jim Squibb was the closest to the pin on No. 3.
JUNIOR TOURNAMENTS
THE SALT Fork Junior Golf Tournament will be held on Tuesday, July 5 at Salt Fork State Park Golf Course, which is located just outside of Cambridge. The event will have three age groups (13-14, 15-16, 17-18) for boys and two (13-15, 16-18) for girls with the top three in each age group receiving awards. The entry fee is $30 for non Salt Fork members and $20 for members. There will be a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.
