St. C.’s Vucelich wins the Elks Junior Tourney

Three East Ohio junior golfers enjoyed strong showings at the annual Wheeling Elks Lodge #28 junior golf tournament, which was held last Wednesday at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course.

St. Clairsville’s Brendan Vucelich claimed the top prize in the event by shooting a round of 78, including a solid 37 on the back nine of the course.

Martins Ferry’s Luke Krol was the runnerup with a round of 78. He, too, fired a 37 on the backside of the course. Rounding out the top three was St. Clairsville’s Jacob Jefferies, who shot a 79

The top three finishers were the only players in the field to post a score below 90 in the event.

Emily Holzopfel, who attends Buckeye Local, won the female side of the event with a 102.

OGLEBAY PARK WOMEN’S GOLF

The Oglebay Park Women’s Golf Club held its annual tournament at Crispin on June 14. The tournament continued the growth its seen in the last several years with more than 100 competitors taking part, the following clubs were represented: Crispin, Moundsville, St. Clair CC, Bethel Park, Lindenwood, South Park, Butler, Ponderosa, Spring Hills and Highland Springs.

The event was played with a scramble format. The champions of the low gross were Tina Phillips, Vickie Wright, Debbie Michaels and Judy Hladek. The low net champions were Cathie Jones, Laura Lee Wetzel, Debbie Eddy and Becky Wetzel.

Prizes were awarded for skills, too. The closest to the pin on No. 5 was Jan Schultz of Crispin; longest putt on No. 17 went to Debbie Rucki of Bethel Park.

WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB

The Ed Yahn Memorial was held on June 15. Chris Bommer prevailed with a round of 36. He was a shot better than both Roger Kupfer and Josh Melnik, who finished second and third, respectively. George Melnik (38) and Robbie Evans (40) rounded out the top five.

Steve Usenick was the champion of the handicap scoring with a round of 33. He was better than Ted Koski, Terry Younkins (34), Jim Druschel (35) and Russ Travis (36), who comprised the remainder of the top five.

The event on June 19 was the Timbergrove 3-man scramble. The trio of Jay Davis, Gary Mercer and Bommer posted a 50. Dave Stauver, Dick Moore and Bill Caldwell finished second with a 60, while Kupfer, Doug Miller and Steve Domyan had a 60. The team of Robbie Evans, Doug Miller and Steve Domyan was fourth with a 60. Jim Ennis, Bob Green and McLaughlin posted a 64 to finish fifth.

In the handicap scoring, Josh Foose, Matt DeSantis and Mike DeSantis fired a round of 51, which was two shots better than Tony Campbell, Tom Mitchell and Bill Piccard. Josh Green, Bill Kerns and Steve Usenick were third with a 54. Larry Glover, Bob Hicks and Ted Koski finished fourth with a 56. Russ Travis, Dennis Porter and Jerry Daugherty were fifth with a 60.

The Elm Grove Collision event was held last Wednesday. Evans prevailed by two shots over Lightner with a 33. Melnik was third with a round of 35 and Mercer finished fourth in the medal standings with a 35. Mike DeSantis was fifth with a round of 38.

Bruno DeCrease finished as the champion of the handicap scoring with a 31. Joe Kosar was second with a 32 and Todd Morrison was third with a round of 33.

WHEELING CC

The club hosted its annual Stuart Bloch Cup event last weekend, which is played under the Stableford Scoring System. Scott Seabright finished at the champion with 81 points amassed over the course of the two days. Dave Zatezalo was second with a 78. Seth Abraham was third with 75 points. Phil High and Thad Obecny II tied for fifth with 74 points. Shishir Shah finished seventh with 73 points.

JUNIOR TOURNEY

The First National Bank Junior Golf Tour held an event at River Greens Golf Course in West Lafayette last Monday with a handful of area players taking part. Harrison Central’s Clint Heavilin was the top are finisher in the 16-18 year old division with a round of 80.

In the 13-15 year old division, Luke Krol (Martins Ferry) finished third overall with a round of 78. Brendan Vucelich (St. Clairsville) posted an 87. Jacob Jeffries (St. Clairsville) was a shot behind Vucelich.

In the 12 and under age group, Matthew Ponzani (St. Clairsville) was fifth overall with a round of 55. He was shots ahead of Will Foster (St. Clairsville).

DEMO DAYS

Belmont Hills Country Club will be playing host to a demo day for both TaylorMade and Mizuno on Friday from 3-7 p.m. The event is open to BHCC members and non members.

SCRAMBLES

THE 21ST annual Belmont Mountaineer Athletic Club Golf Classic will be held on Thursday, July 21 at Moundsville Country Club. A shot-gun start is scheduled for 10 a.m. with Froehlich’s Restaurant providing the post-round meal. The entry fee is $300 per team or $75 per player with competition in the open and corporate competitions. The entry fee includes golf, cart, beverages on the course and the post-round meal. Sponsorship opportunities are available both for corporate sponsors and tribute sponsors. Former WVU women’s basketball standout and BMAC Scholarship recipient Liz Repella is this year’s honoree.
