Inaugural Belmont Co. Relay for Life Scramble slated
The inaugural Belmont County Relay for Life Golf Scramble will be held on Sunday, Oct. 2 at Belmont Hills Country Club.
The event will begin with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. Corporate and hole sponsorships are currently available. Corporate sponsorships, which include a foursome in the event, cost $500, while hole sponsorships are $100.
The entry fee to play is $320 per team and only the first 36 complete teams will be accepted. The entry fee includes golf, cart, skins games, prizes, beverages on the course and food. Starbucks will provide coffee and pastries prior to the round and Outback will provide a dinner following the tournament in the club’s dining room.

DRIVE, CHIP AND PUTT
Will Foster has been a busy young man this summer, playing a lot of golf in multiple junior events.
Earlier this month, he competed in the local qualifier of the USGA’s Drive, Chip and Putt Championship at Lone Pine Country Club in Washington, Pa. He finished with 110 points which earned a trip to Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, Pa on Aug. 10 for the subregional qualifier
A top-two finish at Nemacolin would send Foster to the regional, which is scheduled to be played at Oakmont Country Club.
PGA KALKREUTH CLASSIC
Wheeling Country Club hosted the annual event last Monday. Joey Seabright won with a round of 5-under, 65. The field consisted of 63 players, including several PGA professionals to go along with the amateurs.
WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB
The Dick Gibbons Memorial event was held on July 20. Clark Sambuco prevailed with a round of 33. His score was a shot better than Bruno DeCrease. Gary Mercer also checked in with a 34 and finished third. Chris Bommer’s 34 was good enough for fourth and Art Lightner rounded out the top five with a 36.
In the handicap scoring portion of the event, Mike Perring prevailed with a 30. He was three shots lower than Rick Diefenbaugh. Rich Colley was third with a 34.
The Art Lightner CDL Road Skills Examiner was held on July 24, utilizing a 9-hole bestball and 9-hole scramble format. The team of Roger Kupfer and Lightner finished with a 549, which was four shots better than the duo of Mike DeSantis and Todd Morrison. Finishing third in the medal scoring was Paul Alig Sr. and Paul Alig Jr. with a round of 65. Jim Ennis and Bob Green were fourth with a 66, while Mercer and Bommer finished fifth with a 68.
In the handicap scoring, Colley and Paul Carney won by eight shots, posting a 50. They finished ahead of Joe Kosar and Robbie Evans as well as Josh Green and Bill Kerns. Each team finished with a 58.
ACE
RICK DIEFENBAUGH of Wheeling recorded a hole-in-one on Wednesday, July 13 during the Wheeling Park Men’s Golf Club Tournament. He aced the 175-yard fifth hole, using a 5-wood for his feat. His shot was witnessed by John Bryan, Jerry Daugherty, Russ Travis and Denny Porter.

The St. Joseph, Tiltonsville, Holy Name Society is sponsoring its 34th annual Four-Man Golf Scramble on Saturday, Aug.13 at Fairway River Links in Rayland. Entry fee for the 7 a.m. shotgun start is $50 per golfer and includes a golf cart and continuous food and beverages. New for this year will be cash prizes and a skins game. The Barnesville Community Alumni Band will host a golf scramble on Saturday, Aug. 6 at the Cambridge Country Club. The proceeds of the event will benefit the group’s scholarship fund and instrument loaning program. The entry fee is $240 for a four-person team. That fee includes golf, cart, lunch, prizes. The Buckeye Local Wrestling team is hosting a golf scramble on Saturday, Aug. 13 at Paradise Hills Golf Course in Yorkville. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the event will tee off with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The entry fee is $45 per player or $145 for a three-person team. A new Steelworkers golf outing will be held on Friday, Aug. 12 at Spring Hills Golf Course in East Springfield. The event is open to all steelworkers, both active and retired.
