OFF THE TEE: High school golfers staying busy this summer
The high school golf season is just a little more than two weeks away.
Area players continue to hone their skills and prepare for the season by taking part on respective junior tours throughout the area.
The First National Bank Junior Golf Tour made a stop at Carroll Meadows in Carrollton on Thursday, July 7.
Bridgeport’s Matt Herink was the top finisher, posting a round of 83. Fellow Bulldogs Dylan Nowakowski turned in a 96 in the 16-18 year old division.
In the 13-15 year old division, Luke Krol posted a round of 88 to tie for sixth. Will Foster was third in the 9-hole, 12 and under division with a round of 48.
This past Monday, the FNB Tour played at Oak Shadows Golf Club in New Philadelphia.
River’s Mikayla Newman was the tournament champion07 in the 16-18 year old female division with a round of 95.
In the boys’ 13-15 year old division, St. Clairsville’s Brendan Vucelich tied for second with a round of 81. Krol and St. Clairsville’s Jacob Jeffries also took part. St. C.’s Foster participated in the 12 and under division.
Last Tuesday, the Crystal Springs Junior Golf Tournament was held in Hopewell.
Barnesville’s Davey Wells was the top area finisher with a 97. In the 13-15 year old division, Barnesville’s Payne Johnson was fifth with a round of 87. Carter Wells of Barnesville also took part in the event
STONEY HOLLOW
The Ohio Valley Golf Association heated up again last week with one of the ‘majors’ of the season … the Stoney Hollow Golf Tournament that was held at Oglebay Park’s Speidel Golf Club.
Bryan Myers was the champion of the event by two shots over Jeremy Enslen. Myers turned in a 139, which included a round of 68 on Saturday. Steve Markovitz, Larry Lis Jr. and Mark Cimarolli rounded out the top five.
Justin Ferrell won the first flight title with a score of 151, which was one shot better than Chris Yahn. Jim Tysk and Seth Abraham also checked in with rounds of 152.
John Zitkovic won the Senior Flight with a score of 137. He finished with rounds of 69 and 68. He fought off West Liberty head football coach Roger Waialae, who posted two rounds of 70. John Kingora (143), Bob Clark (144), Brad Shuff (145) and Brad Baker (145) rounded out the top five.
Doug Savage claimed the Super Senior Flight championship with a 144. He was three shots better than John Bailey, Gary Schrickel and George Knapp.

SETH FILBURN of Gnadenhutten aced the 182-yard 13th hole at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course. Filburn used a 7-iron for his fete, which was witnessed by Wes Miller.
FRED OWENS recorded a hole-in-one on the fifth hole at Fairway River Links in Rayland. He used a 9-iron for his 125-yard shot, which was witnessed by Fred Whiteman.
RANDY KOWALCZYK of Wellsburg notched his fifth career hole-in-one last Monday at the Indian Run Golf Course in Avella. He aced the 169-yard sixth hole, using a 5-iron. The shot was witnessed by Jim Janeshek, Charles McClory and Paul C. Misch.
WHEELING PARK
GOLF CLUB
The club’s Corner Bar event was held on July 6. Rich Colley fired a 32 to win the 9-hole event. He was five shots clear of Jim Ennis and Bob Green. Gary Mercer, Doug Miller and Larry Glover all finished with 38s.
In the handicap scoring, Robbie Evans prevailed with a 31, while Chris Bommer settled for second with a 31. Joe Kosar checked in with a round of 33, while Shawn Schwertfeger was fourth with a 35. Mark Hartline and Josh Green finished tied for fifth with a 35.
UPCOMING SCRAMBLES
The Powhatan American Legion Auxiliary Youth Fund is sponsoring their annual golf scramble on July 30 at Clar-Mar golf Course in Powhatan. This scramble is in memory of Mike Stora. It is a three man scramble, cost is $200.00 and includes golf, cart, lunch, beverages, and dinner. Shotgun start at 9am, prizes for top three places, 50/50, chinese raffle, and door prize. The St. Joseph, Tiltons-ville, Holy Name Society is sponsoring its 34th annual Four-Man Golf Scramble on Saturday, Aug. 13 at Fairway River Links in Rayland. Entry fee for the 7 a.m. shotgun start is $50 per golfer and includes a golf cart and continuous food and beverages. New for this year will be cash prizes and a skins game. The Barnesville Community Alumni Band will host a golf scramble on Saturday, Aug. 6 at the Cambridge Country Club. The proceeds of the event will benefit the group’s scholarship fund and instrument loaning program. The entry fee is $240 for a four-person team. That fee includes golf, cart, lunch, prizes. The Buckeye Local Wrestling team is hosting a golf scramble on Saturday, Aug. 13 at Paradise Hills Golf Course in Yorkville. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the event will tee off with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Entry fee is $45 per player or $145 for a three-person team.
