ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Adam Jeffries is a champion once again. The St. Clairsville High graduate and Alderson Broaddus University senior won his third consecutive Belmont Hills Country Club championship last weekend on the par 72 layout.

Not only did Jeffries have to contend with a solid field that included 17 players in the championship flight. Jeffries not only had to deal with the field, but the weather conditions were rough on Sunday.

After the first round, Jeffries found himself three shots back of Buckeye Local product Jade Waligura thanks to a 1-over, 73.

Jeffries looked up at a four-shot deficit after the second round. The current Battler battled his way to another 73 and then seized control with a 2-under round of 70. Waligura posted a 79 in the final round, which opened the door for several-time BHCC champion James Carson to move up into the runner-up spot.

While Jeffries, Carson and Waligura were the only three players to break par in any of the round, Anthony Reasbeck was even in the opening round.

Bryan Woodford claimed the first flight championship with rounds of 73 and 81 for a 153. He was the most lop-sided winner, capturing the championship by 10 strokes. Dave Murphy was second.

In the second flight, Jack Carpenter prevailed with a 159. He was four shots better than Phil Pata Jr.

The third flight, which plays 27 holes, was claimed by Steve Mercer. He won by six shots over Bill Sokolowski.

Kelley Hanlon captured the women’s title, signing for a 95. The Union Local girls basketball coach was five shots better than Lisa Simon.

OBECNY FALLS SHORT

Wheeling native Thad Obecny failed to advance from the stroke-play rounds during last week’s United States Amateur held in Michigan. Obecny, who plays at Coastal Carolina, finished six over in his two rounds. He shot rounds of 74 and 72 on the par 70, Oakland Hills Country Club.
