OFF THE TEE: Lee Ann Scramble returns to the links on Aug.

The Lee Ann Scramble had developed into one of the premier events of the summer season, but had been removed from the calendar for the last few years. It’s back again and is once again honors Lee Ann Schambach

The event is slated for Aug. 28 at Belmont Hills Country Club with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. The entry fee is $85 per person or $340 per team. The cost includes lunch at the turn and dinner afterward, which will be provided by Outback Steakhouse. The top three teams will receive prizes.

The scramble benefits the Lee Ann Foundation, which was established shortly after Lee Ann’s passing from cancer. The Lee Ann Foundation provides support for those affected by cancer in Belmont, Ohio, Marshall, Wetzel and Tyler Counties. The funds help patients with co-pays, wigs, travel expenses related to cancer treatments and other various expenses.

CHAMPIONSHIP

You realize the summer golf tournament season is winding down when clubs begin to hold their championship events.

Oglebay Park held its club championship last weekend, which consisted of 75 golfers competing in four flights.

Thadd Obecny II — a current Coastal Carolina golfer who is headed for the U.S. Amateur this week in Oakland Hills, Michigan — got a final tuneup by posting rounds of 67 and 70 to win the championship with a 137. He was seven shots clear of Rico Simonetti. Bob Clark finished third with a 146, while Bryan Myers, who shared the opening-round lead with Obecny — finished fourth.

In the Spiedel Flights, John Shafer prevailed with a 124, which included his handicap. Dave Slonaker was second with a 142 and Jim Lloyd was third with a 146. George Melnik was fourth with a 147.

In the Oglebay Flight, Mike Kolakowski prevailed with a 124. He was seven shots better than Joe Hartman and eight shots clear of Larry Bonar.

Gary Kiedaisch was fourth with a 136.

In the Biery Flight, Fred Wetzel prevailed with a 127. Doug Hennen posted a 128 to finish second. Todd Nickoles was third with a 128 and Terry Marsh was fourth with a 131.

WHEELING PARK

GOLF CLUB

The 19th Hole Allen Kage Memorial — using a 9-hole scotch twosome — was held on Aug. 7. The duo of Gary Mercer and Chris Bommer prevailed with a 32, while Art Lightner and Roger Kupfer teamed to finish second with a 33. Jim Ennis and Bob Green were third with a 34. Nick Klamut and Bruno DeCrease finished fourth with a 35, while Joe Kosar and Steve Domyan were fifth with a 38.

In the handicap scoring portion of the event, Joe Wurtzbacher and Bob Geyer prevailed with a 30. Jerry Daugherty and Steve Usenick also finished with a 30. Dave Gaiser and Dick Moore finished third with a 31.

The Country Pride Restaurant Bestball event was held on recently. Lightner and Kupfer prevailed with a 32, which was two shots better than Ennis and Green. Jim Kupfer and Ron Heatherly were third with a 34, while John Wakim and DeCrease were fourth with a 35. Mercer and Bommer finished fifth with a 36.

Josh Green and Bill Kerns captured the crown in the handicap scoring portion of the event with a 29. Jerry Daugherty and Usenick finished with a 29. David Gaiser and Dick Moore were third with a 29. Matt DeSantis and Josh Foose were fourth with a 31, while Tony Campbell and Don DeWitt rounded out the top five with a 31.

ACES

DAVE REASBECK posted an ace on Aug. 10 on the par 3, 14th hole at Belmont Hills Country Club to win $300. The shot, which measured 140 yards, was witnessed by Anthony Reasbeck and Van Donahue. Dave used a 8 iron for his 15th career ace.

ZEKE KONTRA of New Alexandria aced the par 3, 150-yard 14th hole at BecWood Hills Golf Course on Aug. 1. Kontra used a 6-iron for his feat, which was witnessed by Randy McCain of Smithfield.

UPCOMING SCRAMBLES

The Leo Zambori Golf Benefit will be held at Belmont Hills CC on Saturday, Oct. 1. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. and be a 4-man best ball golf scramble. The proceeds will benefit Zambori, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. The entry fee is $85per player or $340 per team and it includes lunch, dinner and door prizes.

The Sistersville General Hospital will sponsor its annual benefit golf scramble on Friday, Sept. 23 at the Sistersville Country Club. Registration will open at 9 a.m.,with a shot-gun start at 10 a.m. A new car or cash will be offered for a hole-in-one on hole one. Door prizes, skill prizes, raffles, and various drawings will be held. Registration includes green fees, carts, lunch, and dinner. Team registration is $400 for a four-person team. The St. Clairsville Junior Sports will hold its annual golf scramble at Belmont Hills Country Club on Saturday, Aug. 20 with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. The entry fee is $100 per person for a four-man team. The entry fee includes golf, beverages, dinner, mulligans and skins. Hole and corporate sponsorships are available.

The inaugural Belmont County Relay for Life Golf Scramble will be held on Sunday, Oct. 2 at Belmont Hills Country Club.

The event will begin with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. Corporate and hole sponsorships are currently available. Corporate sponsorships, which include a foursome in the event, cost $500, while hole sponsorships are $100.

The entry fee to play is $320 per team and only the first 36 complete teams will be accepted. The entry fee includes golf, cart, skins games, prizes, beverages on the course and food. Starbucks will provide coffee and pastries prior to the round and Outback will provide a dinner following the tournament in the club’s dining room.
