Former Patriots fueling Gannon’s impressive start

Former Wheeling Park Patriot Zach Phillips hasn’t needed long to prove that he’s plenty worthy of being a starting quarterback at the Division II level.

For the second straight week, Phillips put forth a big game in leading his Gannon Knights to a victory. This week, however, others took notice of his antics.

Phillips was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after he sparked a come-from-behind victory last Saturday at Shippensburg. He finished with 109 yards rushing and 218 yards passing. Plus, he threw his first two collegiate touchdown passes.

The second touchdown pass, which came in the third quarter, covered 84 yards and is the third-longest passing play in Gannon history.

For the season, Phillips has rushed for a team-high 290 yards and 4 touchdowns. He’s also passed for 249 yards.

Phillips certainly isn’t the only Patriots shining for Gannon. He was one of four products of Chris Daugherty’s program to shine for the Knights last weekend.

Joining Phillips on the offensive side of the ball was Matt Hackathorn. He started once again at right tackle.

On the defensive side, linebacker Geremy Paige posted eight tackles, including one for loss last week. For the season, he has 14 tackles, which ranks second on the team.

Jamez Coles, who played a key role for the Patriots’ 2015 state championship team, recorded his first collegiate tackle and pass break up last week. He has appeared in both of Gannon’s games this season.

Gannon will try to make it 3-0 on Saturday when Bloomsburg visits for a noon kickoff.
