OVAC Golf tees off this week at Oglebay Park

The Ohio Valley Athletic Conference will crown its first champions of the 2016-17 school year this week.

The golf championships are slated to unfold Tuesday and Thursday at Oglebay Park.

On Tuesday, the 4A schools will play at Spiedel, while the 1A/2A class will compete down the road at Crispin. On Thursday, the 5A schools will tackle Spiedel, while the 3A field will play at Crispin.

Action in each round is slated to begin at 9:30 a.m. and consists of 18-hole stroke play.

SANDS ELECTRIC EVENT

The 32nd annual Sands Electric Company Golf Classic will be held today at Belmont Hills Country Club. The event features 28 players and teams — other than the defending champions Jim Mahute and Chris Baugh — are chosen randomly before play begins. The format utilized for the event is 9-hole best ball on the front and 9-hole scramble on the back.

OGLEBAY PARK GOLF CLUB

The club held its annual WesBanco Labor Day Tournament last Monday. More than 75 players took part in the event, which used an 80 percent handicap, three best ball out of four format at Spiedel’s Palmer Course.

Winning by eight shots was the team of Donnie Sheller, Mike Anthony, Scott Seabright and Tim Bishop. Finishing second with a 192 were Jake Fullerton, Greg Woodfin, Zach Stahl and Zack Hood. Posting a 197 for third place were Curt Byrum, R.H. Wetzel, Jim Mortakis and Rick Zandron. Fourth place with a 199 went to Randy Sheperd, Bob Clark, Brooke Garrison and Roger Waialae. Rounding out the top five was the team of Hal Miller, Rick Welker, Marty Crinkey and Mike Neal with a 202.

The closest to the pins went to R.H. Wetzel (No. 3), Marty Crinkey (No. 5), Rick Zandron (No. 9), Burke Spensky (No. 13), Mike Kolakowski (No. 15) and Chris Yahn (No. 17).

The closest to the pin on the second shot went to Jake Fullerton (No. 1) and Mike Wetzel (No. 12). The longest putt went to Zandron (No. 16) and Crinkey was the skins winner.

LEE ANN SCRAMBLE

The annual Lee Ann Scramble was held on Aug. 28 at Belmont Hills Country Club. All of the proceeds from the event go to the Lee Ann Foundation to assist patients affected by cancer in the Ohio Valley. The winning team in the event was the foursome of Mike McTeague, Jason Balcar, Larry Blake and Dennis Reilly. The foursome posted a 17-under, 55.

Tournament officials expressed their appreciation to sponsors Muxie, Wheeling Hospital, Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal, Bordas and Bordas, Belmont Correctional Institute and Property Maintenance Services.

MEMORIAL SCRAMBLE

The annual event was held on Aug. 13 at BecWood Hills Golf Course. The team of Kristian Carter, Brad Crawford, Rusty Fonner and Mark Thorn prevailed in the event, posting a round of 57. Just a stroke back was the squad of Jim Baugh, Tommy Baugh, Allen Glitch and Dave Stack.

Awards for the longest putt went to Corey Gentile and Chip Lucas. Longest drives went to Butch Meager and Mark Thorn, while closest to the pin prizes were claimed by Anita Day and Gary Silverio.

TOURNAMENT

The event was held last month at Cadiz Country Club. Cadiz’s team of Chuck Bizzari, Marty Howarth, Brent Walrath, and Dave Yanok claimed the team prize, while Belmont Hills Country Club member Larry Blake was the individual champion.

The winners of the respective flights included: Marty Howarth (50-59), Larry Blake (60-64), Dave Reasbeck (65-69), Dave Johnson (70-74), Chuck Dimmick (75-79) and Bill Croskey (80 and over). Eric Exley won the closest to the pin.

ACE

JACK CARPENTER aced the 132-yard 14th hole at Belmont Hills Country Club. He used a 9-iron for his shot, which was witnessed by Zach Azallion. This was Carpenter’s third career ace.
