TL Super Bowl Poll: Expect the Pats to hoist the Lombardi

The numbers are in!

If the Ohio Valley knows football like we think it does, you can just focus on the commercials and the half-time show, featuring Lady Gaga because the game is going to go in favor of New England.

The annual Times Leader Super Bowl Poll, which was orginally the brainchild of the late former T-L Sports Writer Rich Gibson, expects the Patriots to win in resounding fashion this evening in Super Bowl LI.

The poll is comprised of area high school coaches and media personalities. Also included are picks from Ohio Valley natives who are involved in all levels of football. All told, 101 people were surveyed.

Of those, only 42 believe the Atlanta Falcons will claim their first Vince Lombardi Trophy. While the reasons differ, a majority of the folks we talked to believe it boils down to big-game experience and more specifically, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.

If Fox’s seven-hour, pre-game show isn’t your thing, this should help pass the time until kickoff. Let the picks begin:

BRETT McLEAN, St. Clairsville — Matt Ryan and someone other than Julio Jones go off for a big night. Expect a shootout. FALCONS, 40-36.

BRYAN NARDO, Emporia State — I hate to ever pick against Brady and Belichick, but Ryan and Jones are playing at a high level and can take over a game. FALCONS, 35-31.

JUSTIN KROPKA, Harrison Central — I think Atlanta’s better, but don’t think you can go against Belichick, Brady and the Patriots. PATRIOTS, 27-24.

RICK GOODRICH, John Marshall — Tom Brady and Belichick’s system are just too much for Atlanta to handle. PATRIOTS, 34-27.

RICH DUNCAN, Berry College — Tough game to pick. I like what the Falcons have going, but it’s tough to pick against the Brady and Belichick combination. Turnovers will be the difference. PATRIOTS, 33-28.

CHRIS DAUGHERTY, Wheeling Park — I’m a Steeler fan! So, go Falcons! FALCONS, 34-24.

MARK SPIGARELLI, Bellaire — Atlanta has more speed on defense and it will mix up its coverages. FALCONS, 35-31.

B.J. DEPEW, Linsly — Atlanta has a really special defensive back named Goodwin who has beaten the odds. So will this team. FALCONS, 27-24.

DONNIE KERNS, Buckeye Trail — I’ve learned from being a Steelers fan to not pick against Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. PATRIOTS, 31-28.

TODD FITCH, Louisiana Tech — Should be a good game. A couple of turnovers could be the difference. PATRIOTS, 28-24.

RICK DeLUCA, Times Leader — Atlanta’s defense will give Tom Brady a run for his money. FALCONS, 31-17.

SCOTT HOLT, Cameron — Matt Ryan and the arsenal at his disposal make the most of their chance. FALCONS, 27-23.

ERIC BELANCIC, WKKX — New England takes away its opponent’s best weapon every week. This will be no different as it will double Julio Jones and stuff the run. PATRIOTS, 24-10.

JERRID MARHEFKA, Ohio University — Only reason I’m not going with New England is because I trained a couple of summers ago with C.J. Goodwin, and I can’t go against him. FALCONS, 27-20.

CHASE KINEMOND, Bethany College — Atlanta has a great defense, but I don’t think its defense will match up great against Brady. It’ll be a close game until the fourth quarter. PATRIOTS, 28-17.

MATT NARDO, Emporia State — Atlanta has enough pass rush to force Brady to move around in the pocket and Julio Jones will show he’s the best receiver in the game. FALCONS, 24-17.

EMILIO APPOLLONI, Purdue — Matt Ryan and Julio Jones are unstoppable right now and I want to see an Ohio Valley boy get a ring. FALCONS, 28-24.

MARK HINERMAN, WKKX — It’s hard to pick against New England, but Julio Jones makes enough plays to pull out the win. FALCONS, 27-24.

DERRICK STICKLES, Edison — It will take some time for New England to get things rolling, but once they do, it will be difficult to stop. PATRIOTS, 16-14.

MATT BARBOUR, Ohio Dominican — Atlanta has been hot and I don’t think New England’s defense will be able to stop the Atlanta offense. FALCONS, 31-28.

ANDREW CONNOR, Indian Creek — Really like the way Tom Brady is playing and I think New England’s D will be able to slow down Atlanta just enough to get the win. PATRIOTS, 31-24.

SAM JONES, Buckeye Local — Atlanta plays decent enough man-to-man defense and Matt Ryan is on fire. FALCONS, 31-27.

RICK THORP, Times Leader — Bill Belichick given an extra week to prepare, it’s hard to believe the Patriots won’t be ready. PATRIOTS, 28-24.

BRENDAN FERNS, West Virginia University — I am going with Atlanta because I want to see C.J. Goodwin get a Super Bowl ring. FALCONS, 27-24.

AUSTIN DORRIS, Indiana University — It’s hard to go against Tom Brady and New England, but Atlanta looked unbelievable against the Packers. And, IU grad Tevin Coleman is a big part of Atlanta’s offense. FALCONS, 31-28.

ROBERT VARGO, Ohio Dominican — Atlanta’s offense will get off to a fast start, which will allow their pass rushers to make enough plays to get after Brady. Julio Jones will make plays late to close it out. FALCONS, 27-23.

HAYDN LEWIS, Air Force Academy — I’m going with Atlanta because Ben Garland from the the Air Force Academy plays offensive guard for them, so I’m sticking with the former USAFA player and his team. FALCONS, 21-7.

COLTON McKIVITZ, West Virginia University — Tom Brady is too good to lose right now, especially in the Super Bowl. PATRIOTS, 31-28.

ADAM STEWART, Ohio State University — On top of having arguably the greatest QB/coach combination of all time, New England is also so close to avenging the conspiracy of deflategate, so an extra little bit of extra motivation never hurt anyone. PATRIOTS, 34-24.

TY FLEMING, WKKX — New England running game will keep the ball away from Atlanta and Matt Patricia will take Julio Jones away. Brady will be Brady. PATRIOTS, 37-27.

COREY FILLIPOVICH, Wilmington College — It basically comes down to picking Belichick and Brady over Quinn and Ryan. New England also has the better defense. PATRIOTS, 38-27.

FRED RAY, Fairview, Ky. — Atlanta is potent on the offensive side of the ball. Julio Jones is a tough matchup and Matt Ryan is playing at a high level. FALCONS, 27-24.

JOSH SILLS, West Virginia University — You can’t bet against Tom Brady. PATRIOTS, 31-24.

JAY CIRCOSTA, Monroe Central — If Brady has time to pass … PATRIOTS, 31-24.

GREG HARKNESS, Bridgeport — You just can’t pick against Bill Belichick. PATRIOTS, 28-24.

LARRY MARMIE, Former NFL Coach — It’s hard to go against Belichick and Brady, but I worked with Dan Quinn in Seattle and Atlanta has a lot of weapons and a lot of offense. FALCONS, 31-24.

SCOTT NOLTE, WTRF — Matty Ice and Julio Jones are just too much for the Pats’ D and Wheeling’s C.J. Goodwin gets a ring. FALCONS, 31-28.

DREW SPENCER, Ohio Dominican — There’s something to be said for experience. New England is primed for these big games. PATRIOTS, 31-20.

MIKE FLANNERY, River — It’s a no brainer. Belichick and Brady are two of the best ever in the game. PATRIOTS, 27-17.

ERIC MEEK, Toronto — New England knows how to win and it has an awesome defense. PATRIOTS, 31-13.

ZAC BRUNEY, Ohio Dominican — I’ll root for Atlanta because I like Matt Ryan and want C.J. Goodwin to win, but I think New England has the better defense. PATRIOTS, 28-24.

JESSE WELLS, Shenandoah — Defense wins championships. PATRIOTS, 28-14.

RENO SACCOCCIA, Steubenville — I’m an NFC fan and the matchup favors Atlanta. FALCONS, 27-24.

LARRY DEEM, Beallsville — Brady knows how to win big games. PATRIOTS, 42-35.

CHET POBOLISH, Missouri Western — Matt Ryan is on fire and is going to be really hard to beat. Don’t see New England being able to score enough points. FALCONS, 43-35.

DAN MONTEROSO, West Liberty — You don’t bet against Touchdown Tommy and the best head coach of all time. Plus, I’m a huge New England fan. PATROTS, 34-23.

BRENT CROASMUN, Paden City — Atlanta has looked good enough to win, but New England has the smartest QB in the NFL and the best defensive coaches. PATRIOTS, 30-27.

TONY FILBERTO, Weir — With two weeks to prepare, it’s tough to beat New England. Expect a high scoring game. PATRIOTS, 37-30.

DONNIE YEAGER Jr., Times Leader — Kraft, Brady and Belichick’s goal all season has been for Roger Goodell to hand them the Lombardi. That comes to fruition. PATRIOTS, 38-17

MIKE EDDY, Parkersburg South — Hopefully, I’m wrong, but it’s difficult to bet against New England. PATRIOTS, 31-28.

ELIJIAH BELL, North Carolina A&T — C.J. Goodwin makes it clear to the youth in Wheeling that you can do anything you put your mind to. FALCONS, 31-17.

MIKE YOUNG, Wheeling Central — Atlanta will be hungry, aggressive and its high-powered offense should be enough to win. FALCONS, 28-24.

KEVIN GUNN, Cambridge — It’ll be tough to contain Atlanta’s offense. FALCONS, 31-27.

JOHN DURDINES, Bishop Donahue — Atlanta has too much firepower and just enough pass rush to force a turnover or two. FALCONS, 41-31.

JOHN BLACKMORE, WKKX — The underdog in this game has paid out 12 of the last 15 years against the spread and the favorite hasn’t won since Green Bay in 2011. I’ll take the greatest coach and quarterback in NFL history to win outright. PATRIOTS, 34-13.

BRUCE STILES, Union Local — Great coach and old-school approach. PATRIOTS, 27-14.

TED ARNEAULT Jr., Oak Glen — Both quarterbacks will be hard to slow down, so I think it will come down to Atlanta’s athletic defensive line disrupting Brady like they did Rodgers in the NFC title game. FALCONS, 34-31.

DAVE CHAPMAN, Magnolia — Two weeks to prepare for Brady and Belichick? Brady won’t let them lose. PATRIOTS, 45-20.

VON WOODING, Oberlin — Chris Hogan, the invisible receiver, has a big game. Matt Ryan is not elite. PATRIOTS, 35-21.

JOSH LUDWIG, East Liverpool — Atlanta is fast on defense, explosive on offense and on a roll. It seems like its year to win a championship. FALCONS, 34-24.

RYAN WILSON, Clay-Battelle — Tom Brady is hard to beat. PATRIOTS, 35-32.

ROB METZGER, WTOV — If defense wins championships, I’ll take New England’s top-ranked defense against Atlanta’s top-ranked offense. New England’s offense isn’t bad either. PATRIOTS, 31-17

CHRISTIAN WITCHEY, St. Vincent College — New England’s defense comes up big to stop Matt Ryan and Atlanta’s explosive offense. PATRIOTS, 34-27.

MARK HOLENKA, Shadyside — A lot of football is mental. For Brady, the thought is revenge. If he can get the other Patriots to buy in … PATRIOTS, 31-23.

BOB KOCH, OVAC All-Star Game Director — New England offense grinds out points and its defense gets stops. PATRIOTS, 31-18.

TOM RATAICZAK, OVAC Executive Secretary — I like what Atlanta did to Green Bay. I was surprised they shut them down like they did. Plus, they have a local product in C.J. Goodwin. FALCONS, 30-27.

STEVE DALEY, Steubenville Central — No logical reason behind my pick, but I’d like to see Atlanta win its first. FALCONS, 31-28.

ROGER WAIALAE, West Liberty — It’s hard to pick against Tom Brady. Quarterback is the hardest position to play in all of sports and he knows what it takes to win the big one. PATRIOTS, 34-31.

DARRIN HICKS, Madonna — Giving Belichick and New England two weeks is like an off-season of preparation. PATRIOTS, 38-31.

JOHN KELLEY, University — Quite simply … Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. PATRIOTS, 34-27.

MATT LACY, Morgantown — New England has experience on its side and plays great D. Plus, Tom Brady is pretty darn good. PATRIOTS, 38-17.

JERRY AMES, WKKX — Atlanta is the hottest team in football with an incredible defensive line that will pressure Tom Brady all evening. FALCONS, 35-17.

JORDAN CRAMMER, WTRF — Atlanta has been overlooked all season and its defense is stifling. Its defense has come up with timely turnovers and big stops all season. Brady will have met his match. FALCONS, 35-28.

MICHAEL FERNS, West Virginia University — Tom Brady is just too good. PATRIOTS, 31-17.

ERIC HUCK, Fort Frye — As good as New England is, it’s Matt Ryan’s year. FALCONS, 35-31.

RICH WRIGHT, Southern Local — On paper, I think Atlanta has the edge, but New England usually finds a way to win big games. PATRIOTS, 31-24.

BILL GARVEY, Bethany College — Dan Quinn is a friend. We coached together at Hofstra, and I think Atlanta is the hotter team. FALCONS, 31-24.

JULIANNE PELUSI, WTOV — Brady and Belichick will get their fifth ring together (and revenge on Roger Goodell). Belichick will find a way to keep Atlanta’s prolific offense relatively quiet. PATRIOTS, 34-28.

MARK DIERKES, Times Leader — Matty Ice gets a ring and denies Brady from receiving the Lombardi Trophy from Goodell. FALCONS, 29-23.

JOHN MAGISTRO, Westerville Central — Atlanta has more speed and a better running game, but somehow Brady and Belichick seem to know how to get it done. PATRIOTS, 34-24.

DENVER WILLIAMS, Trinity College — It should be a great, high-scoring game. It’s hard to pick against Brady and Belichick. New England is setting the standard in the NFL right now. PATRIOTS, 38-31.

LEVI NELSON, Rittman — Though Atlanta features an explosive offense and an improved defense, I’m not willing to bet against Brady and Belichick. PATRIOTS, 27-24.

QUINCY WILSON, W.Va. State University — New England will jump out early, but I think Atlanta comes back. FALCONS, 28-24.

GRANT GAYDOS, Caldwell — I prefer to root for the Falcons just to see someone else get a win, but how can you pick against Belichick and Brady? PATRIOTS, 31-30.

PERRY NARDO, Times Leader/Intelligencer — The game will be too big for the young Atlanta defense and once it gets its feet under it, it will be too late. PATRIOTS, 35-21.

DAVE BRUNEY, Martins Ferry — Atlanta has a lot of weapons and Ryan’s playing great, but New England’s attention to detail on both sides of the ball, as well as Brady and Belichick make it tough to go against them. PATRIOTS, 31-24.

RYAN RECKER, WTAE — Fifteen years ago, I made the mistake of picking a high-powered Rams’ offense to beat Brady, Belichick and New England. It didn’t work out for me then, but I’m going to try it again. FALCONS, 30-27.

KURT STUBBS, J.J. Huddle — My heart wants to pick Atlanta, but my head tells me Tom Brady will get it done. Hoping the game turns into a track meet. PATRIOTS, 31-24.

JOHN SIMONSON, WTOV — Overall team speed edge goes to Atlanta. FALCONS, 34-30.

MARK COOK, Barnesville — Tom Brady always finds a way to get it done and Bill Belichick surpasses Chuck Noll with his fifth Super Bowl victory. PATRIOTS, 27-23.

LOGAN MILLER, Valley — Two high-powered offenses, but the difference is New England’s defense. PATRIOTS, 34-27.

JEFF TWIDDY, Meadowbrook — Josh McDaniels is a McKinley Bulldog, so that’s reason enough for me. PATRIOTS, 42-35.

MAC McLEAN, Brooke — New England is just too good, so Tom Brady gets ring number five. PATRIOTS, 35-17.

RYAN WALTON, Tyler Consolidated — Just because of Tom Brady. PATRIOTS, 42-24.

DAVE CLUTTER, OVAC Football Commissioner — Atlanta’s offense can match New England. Atlanta’s youth will frustrate Brady. Halftime adjustments and the kicking game make the difference. FALCONS, 29-27.

JAY SAWVEL, Wake Forest — Brady is playing too well and New England’s experience will help them beat a talented team. PATRIOTS, 31-27.

LANCE MEHL, NFL Alumnus — Atlanta has one of the best offenses in the NFL and scores just enough to get by Brady and New England. FALCONS, 35-31.

KIM COLLETTE, Times Leader — Matty Ice delivers for the Falcons and deflates Brady’s redemption season. FALCONS, 35-32.

RYAN STANKO, WTOV — It’s hard to pick against the greatest quarterback-coach duo in the NFL. Brady will expose the Atlanta defense. PATRIOTS, 38-34.

DAVE BLOMQUIST, WWVA — Tom Brady cements his status as the greatest quarterback in NFL history with another Super Bowl victory. PATRIOTS, 27-17.

SETH STASKEY, Times Leader — Matt Ryan is playing as well as anyone in the game and will lead Atlanta to a win in a shootout. FALCONS, 34-27.
