Off the Tee: Oglebay Park Golf Club holds first 2017 event
The first Oglebay Park Golf Club tournament of the 2017 season was held last weekend.
The Allen Kage Memorial Snowbird attracted a field of 120 players to Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course.
Bryan Myers fired a round of 70 to win the medal division by three shots over George Templin. Joe Doerr and Mike Wetzel checked in with rounds of 71, while Paul Kurtz and Jonathan Kreiter both signed for a 73 to round out the top five.
Jay Davis, Bob Potts, Bill Glitch and Mike Wilson all posted a round of 74.
In the handicap scoring division, Jay Salva prevailed with a 62. Mark Maguire Sr. also posted a 62. Neal Chase (65), Jay Tazar (65) and Tom Gessler (67) rounded out the top five.
Six closest to the pins were also awarded during the round. Those were won by Tom LaFlam (No. 2), Jay Grob (No. 5), Tom LaFlam (No. 7), Joe McGlumphy (No. 10) and Mike Wetzel (No. 13).
Skins were won by Jason Grob (No. 2) and John Duncan (No. 10).
ACE
Kevin Benoit aced the par 3, No. 5 hole at Fairway River Links on Sunday by using a 9-iron on the 130-yard hole.
It was witenssed by Shawn Donaldson, Gary Griffiths and Rob Myers.
WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB
The Elm Grove Civics event was held with medal and handicap play last Sunday.
Roger Kupfer prevailed in the event with a round of 34, while Art Lightner was second with a 37. Five players, including Nick Klamut, Dick Moore, Bob Green, Dave Stauver and Ron Heatherly checked in with a round of 40.
In the handicap scoring portion of the event, Rick Richmond prevailed with a 34. Josh Foose and Josh Green both signed for a 36. Jim Druschel and Steve Usenick had rounds of 38.
COURSE IS OPEN
The Brooke Hills Park Golf Course new foot golf course and driving range open today. The hours will be from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily.
SCRMABLES
FLUSHING MASONIC LODGE SCRAMBLE
The event, sponsored by the Flushing Masonic Lodge, is slated for May 20 at the Cadiz Country Club. This is an open tournament to all who wish to play, but is limited to first 22 paid teams. Registration and hot dogs set for 11:30 a.m. and a shotgun start is at 12:30 p.m. The cost is $70 enter per person. There will be a steak dinner and awards/door prizes to follow in the clubhouse-beverages on the course at select locations. All proceeds will benefit two $500 scholarships to both Union Local and Harrison Central High School students

SONS OF ITALY SCRAMBLE
The 18th annual Sons of Italy Bellaire Lodge golf scramble, which benefits Alzheimers & Cooley’s Anemia Charities will be held on Monday, June 5 with a 1 p.m. shotgun start at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course. The entry fee is $200 per four-man team. The fee includes golf, cart, refreshments on the course and dinner served at the Haller Shelter after the tournament. The top three teams will receive cash prizes and the event is limited to the first 36 teams. To register, contact Phil Pata at 740-695-0691.
BMAC SCRAMBLE
THE 23rd annual BMAC Golf Classic will be held at Moundsville Country Club on Thursday, July 20. More information will be released at a later date, according to BMAC.
ST. C LEGION SCRAMBLE
A new scramble is set for Saturday, May 6 at Belmont Hills Country Club.
A scramble to benefit the St. Clairsville American Legion Post 159 baseball team, which is made up of players from all over Belmont County, will be held at Belmont Hills Country Club on Saturday, May 6.
The scramble will begin with a shot-gun start at 8:45 a.m. The entry fee is $80 per player, which includes golf, cart, skins game, food and beverages on the course and a post-round meal.
The post-round meal will be sponsored by Outback Steakhouse and will be served at the American Legion. Prior to the round, coffee and pastries will be provided by Starbucks.
Corporate sponsorships are available for $500, which includes one team entry as well as the company’s logo placed on the billboard. Hole sponsorships are available for $100 each.
All proceeds will go to the Post 159 baseball team, which experienced one of its finest seasons last summer. It won the district tournament for the second consecutive season and took part in the state tournament in Lancaster. It also became the first Ohio Valley team to win the 19U bracket the giant Beast of the East held over Fourth of July weekend.
