Off the Tee: Kupfer claims Ohio Valley Awards event by four shots

WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB

On April 30, the Ohio Valley Awards event was held. The 18-hole event was captured by Roger Kupfer, who shot a 67. He was four shots clear of both Rich Colley and Jay Davis. Bruce DeCrease and Art Lightner rounded out the top five, signing for a 72.

In the handicap scoring, Bill Piccard won with a 63. Jim Ennis posted a 64, while Bill Kerns added a 65. Don DeWitt had a 67 and Paul Alig Sr. was fifth with a 69.

On April 26, the Sharpsky Printing event was held. DeCrease prevailed with a 32, which was three shots better than Kupfer. Colley finished with a 36. Larry Goodnight was fourth with a 38, while Nick Klamutt and Tom Mitchell tied for fifth with a 39.

In the handicap portion of the event, Mike Mazure prevailed by a shot over Mike Crow with a 31. Mike DeSantis was third with a 34. Kerns was fourth with a 35 and Terry Younkins was fifth with a 35.

On April 23, the Glass Unlimited sponsored event was held, utilizing a bestball scramble format. Bommer and Mercer prevailed by shots over Ennis and Green with a 63. Lightner and Kupfer teamed for a 67, while Moore and Stauver and Klamut and McLaughlin both had a 71.

In the handicap scoring, Morrison and DeSantis posted the victory with a round of 56. Colley and Carney finished with a 57 for second place. Usenick and Wurtzbacher were third with a 60. Druschel and Crow posted a 64, while Kosar and Domyan posted a 65.

WHEELING COUNTRY CLUB

The club’s men’s opening day event was held last Sunday with a Better Bll of Pair being utilized.

Steve Bloch and Jim Jorden prevailed with a 62. They were two shots better than Paul Irby and Jeff Shultz as well as Jim Taylor and Joe Blalock. Those teams finished second and third, respectively after a scorecard playoff.

In the gross scoring, Joe Doerr and Seth Abraham posted a 68, while Scott Seabright and Jacob Nickell finished with a 69.

Carl Bippus and Dave Miller won the closest to the pin and longest putt, respectively.

YMCA BOBBY

BAKER MEMORIAL SCRAMBLE

The annual event will be held on Friday at Belmont Hills Country Club. The entry fee is $75 per person or $300 per team. The cost includes golf, cart, dinner and refreshments. Prizes will be awarded to the top two teams. All proceeds from the event will benefit youth sports at the YMCA. For more information, please call Curtis at 304-242-8086.

BOOSTER SCRAMBLE

The annual event will be held on Saturday at Moundsville Country Club. The shotgun start is planned for 8:30 a.m. and the entry fee is $240 per team. Food and beverages will be provided. Anyone interested, may sign up at Eddie’s Barber Shop in Shadyside or by calling Bud Davis at 676-6199.

DOWLER MEMORIAL SCRAMBLE

The sixth annual Thomas R. Dowler Memorial Classic Golf Scramble will be held on Monday, May 15 at Belmont Hills Country Club. The event will begin with a shotgun start at noon. Lunch and registration actually begin at 11 a.m. Teams entered receive golf, cart, lunch, drinks on the course and dinner. Skill contests will be held and there will be two chances to win a vehicle. The proceeds generated from the event go to the Belmont College Thomas R. Dowler Fund, which will benefit students at Belmont College. For more information, contact R.J. Konkoleski at 740-699-3980.

DEPARTMENT SCRAMBLE

The sixth annual Sardis Volunteer Fire Department golf scramble will be held on Saturday, May 20 at the Fairway Riverside Golf Course in Sardis. The four-player, better ball scramble will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The top three teams will receive cash prizes. There will also be door prizes and raffles. SCRAMBLE FOR SCHOLARSHIPS

The event, sponsored by the Flushing Masonic Lodge, is slated for May 20 at the Cadiz Country Club. This is an open tournament to all who wish to play, but is limited to first 22 paid teams. Registration and hot dogs set for 11:30 a.m. and a shotgun start is at 12:30 p.m. The cost is $70 enter per person. There will be a steak dinner and awards/door prizes to follow in the clubhouse-beverages on the course at select locations. All proceeds will benefit two $500 scholarships to both Union Local and Harrison Central High School students

SONS OF ITALY SCRAMBLE

The 18th annual Sons of Italy Bellaire Lodge golf scramble, which benefits Alzheimers & Cooley’s Anemia Charities will be held on Monday, June 5 with a 1 p.m. shotgun start at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course. The entry fee is $200 per four-man team. The fee includes golf, cart, refreshments on the course and dinner served at the Haller Shelter after the tournament. TOM DONAHUE MEMORIAL SCRAMBLE

The American Legion , Bellaire Post 52, Tom Donahue Memorial Golf Scramble will be held on Saturday, June 17 at Bec-Wood Golf Course in Rayland. The entry fee is $60 per player or $240 per team and it needs to be paid by June 5.
