Off The Tee: Oglebay Park Golf Club crowns two-man champions
The Oglebay Park Golf Club held its annual Michelob Ultra Two-Man Best Ball event, which is sponsored by Carenbauer Distributing, last weekend.
The duo of Brooke Garrison and Paul Kurtz prevailed with a score of 57. They were a shot better than T.C. Chappelear and Thomas Chappelear. Mike Bogers and Jay Davis finished third with a 59, which was the same score that Dave Sims and Jim Bittengle posted.
Ted and Adam Stupak finished with a 61. Other 61s were recorded by Larry Bonar and Doug Richards; Brett Clough and Zack Hood; Joe Grilli and Mike Wetzel; Tim Pelley and Mark Maguire Sr. and Bill Glitch and Jim Dailer finished with a 62.
Closest to the pin prizes were won by Jim Bittengle (No. 2), Brooke Garrison (No. 5), Larry Bonar (No. 7), Harry Himrod (No. 10) and T.C. Chappelear (No. 13).
Skins were pocketed by Bill Glitch (No. 7), Brooke Garrison (No. 8 and No. 16) and Paul Kurtz (No. 2).
ELKS JUNIOR
TOURNAMENT
The annual Wheeling Elks Junior Golf Tournament was held a few weeks ago.
Winning the 16-18 year old division was Nathaniel Martin (78) who won by virtue of his score on the hardest handicap holes. He edged out Derrick Harrison, who also finished with a 78. Dustin Beasel finished five shots off the pace.
In the 13-15 year old division, Ryan Dembiczak shot an 86 to win by two shots over Cody Sprowls.
In the 10-12 year old division, Colton Sprowls fired an 88 to win, while Rocco Paolina posted a 95 to finish second and Cam Koegler was third with a 97.
Emily Holzopfel won the girls portion of the event, firing a round of 92. She was eight shots clear of Clarissa Edgar and 10 shots in front of Michaela Green.
JUNIOR TOUR
The First National Bank Junior Golf Tour made a stop at Willandale Golf Club to play the par 72 layout last Monday.
St. Clairsville’s Brendan Vucelich was the top area finisher. He carded a round of 83. Barnesville’s Davey Wells checked in with an 88.
In the 13-15 year old division, Martins Ferry’s Luke Krol posted a round of 84.
In the female division, Buckeye Local’s Emily Holzopfel signed for an 89. Buckeye Trail’s Rylie Smith won the girls 13-15 division, which played nine holes, with a score of 45. She was six shots clear of her nearest competitor.
BELLAIRE TOUCHDOWN CLUB SCRAMBLE
The annual Bellaire Touchdown Club Scramble was held last Saturday at Fairway River Links with an impressive field taking part.
The winning team, which was comprised of John Potter, Jay Potter, Jay Kolb & Brian Yclau, shot a 12-under par. Tim Ciaradelli’s team was second and Justin Paliswat’s squad finished third.
There were also skill prizes awarded.
The Bellaire Touchdown Club wanted to express its appreciation to all of the sponsors, donors, participants, former Bellaire Alumni/Pro athletes who participated and workers who made this year’s golf scramble a success. The 2018 scramble will be held on June 30.
WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB
The Wheeling Park Memorial event was held on June 25. Nick Klamut prevailed in the event with a round of 68. Art Lightner shot a 69, while Roger Kupfer also signed for a 69 to finish third. Tony Coppa finished fourth with a 72. Tom Mitchell, Bob Green and Ron Heatherly finished tied for third with a 74.
In the handicap scoring, Steve Usenick was the winner with a 61, while Russ Travis was second with a 65. Joe Kosar (65), Bob Hicks (65) and Bill Kerns (66) rounded out the top five.

JOSH BLUM aced the 140-yard, 11th hole at Fairway River Links last week. Blum used a 9-iron on the par hole. Witnessing his fete was Rob Woods.

The Bridgeport Bulldogs Wrestling Team 2nd annual Golf Scramble will take place Saturday, July 8 at Paradise Hills Golf Course in Yorkville. Cost is $55 per person/$220 per four-person team. The seventh annual Vance Deihl Memorial Scholarship Scramble is slated for Saturday, July 22 at Cadiz Country Club. The entry fee is $60 per player with checks made payable to Vance Deihl Memorial Scholarship Fund. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the tournament begins at 8 a.m. The entry fee includes beverages, lunch at the turn and dinner after the round.
