Off The Tee: Ohio postseason begins

The quest for the coveted golf state championship in Ohio begins this week.

Area teams will take part in the sectional tournaments, beginning Monday. The Division II schools will play at River Greens in West Lafayette that day, while the Division III schools will tee it up at the Cambridge Country Club on Wednesday. The Eastern District girls teams and individuals will play on Tuesday at Carroll Meadows.

In Division III, the Eastern District will send six teams and six individuals to the district tournament, which will be held on Monday, Oct. 2 at River Greens.

The field consists of Barnesville, Rosecrans, Bridgeport, Buckeye Trail, Steubenville Catholic, Conotton Valley, Fort Frye, Garaway, Hiland, Malvern, Monroe Central, Newcomerstown, River, Shadyside, Strasburg, Toronto and Tuscarawas Central Catholic.

In Division II, 25 schools will vie for eight team spots and eight individual spots in the district, which will be held at Eagle Sticks Golf Club in Zanesville on Oct. 2.

The field consists of Beaver , Buckeye Local, Cambridge, Carrollton, Claymont, Coshocton, East Liverpool, Edison, Harrison Central, Indian Creek, Indian Valley, John Glenn, Martins Ferry,

Meadowbrook, Minerva, Morgan, Philo, Ridgewood, River View, Sandy Valley, St. Clairsville, Steubenville, Tuscarawas Valley, Union Local and West Muskingum.

The Division III state tournament will be held on Oct. 13 and 14 at Ohio State University’s Scarlet Course, while the Division II field will compete the same weekend, but in Sunbury at the Northstar Golf Club.

OGLEBAY GOLF CLUB

The club held its 11th tournamernt of the season with 72 players teeing it up in the Bordas & Bordas Three Man Mix last Sunday at Crispin.

The format utilized was one golfer plays six holes with individual stroke play, while the other two golfers play a two-man scramble. Every six holes, the lineup changes.

The winning trio consisted of Scott Blass, Jim Bittengle and Grant Van Laar with a 137. They were one shot better than Tony Campbell, Tom Mitchell and Don Dewitt. Mark Maguire, Jake Pennybacker and T.C. Chappelear shot a 141, which was good enough for third.

In fourth place were George Templin, Joe Grilli and Mike Wetzel with a 142. Also posting a 142 were Jim Tysk, Joe Hartman and Steve Schubert.

Closest to the pin prizes went to Mike Mazure (No. 2), Mike Neal (No. 5), Tom Gaudino (No. 7), Joe Grilli (No. 10) and Scott Blass (No. 13).

On Sept. 10, the club host the TJ’s Sports Garden Senior Club Champiuonship with 54 golfers in the field, which included medal and handicap scoring.

The champions in the medal scoring were

50-54 — Eric Stakem, 79; 55-59 — Rich Humphrey, 70; 60-64 — Bob Clark, 66; 65-69 — Jim Dailer, 74; 70 + — Jerry Ernest, 77.

In the medal scoring the winners were:

50-54 — Steve Schubert, 65; 55-59 — Chris Bommer, 65; 60-64 — Bob Custer, 61; 65-69 — Don Werbecki, 66; 70+ — Terry Younkins, 66.

The closest to the pin prizes went to Tom Mitchell (No. 2), Bob Custer (No. 5); Gary Mercer (No. 7), Tony Campbell (No. 10) and Steve Schubert (No. 13).

WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB

The club’s Stag Day Event was held on Sept. 17. Winning the medal scoring was Bill Kerns with a 73. Paul Alig Jr. was second with a 73, while Steve Domyan was third with a 73.

In the handicap scoring, Dennis Porter was the champion with a round of 72, while Lloyd Carmichael was second with an 81 and Bob McLaughlin was third with an 85.

The World Series of Golf was also held on Sept. 17. Art Lightner prevailed with a 64. Roger Kupfer was second with a 65, while Bob Green was third with a 72.

In the handicap scoring, Nick Klamut was the champion with a 64, while Joe Wurtzbacher was second in 65, while Rich Colley was third with a 65.
