Sands Electric tourney champions crowned
As it pertains to local golf, the second Sunday in September means only one thing.
The annual Sands Electric Company Golf Classic was held for the 33rd consecutive year last Sunday with a field of 24 players taking part in the two-man, best ball scramble.
A playoff was needed to determine the winner in a hotly contested tournament that features random-draw teams. Bill Mumley and Ted Ducker took the top prize outlasting defending champions Bill Glitch and Roy “Al” Glitch. Both teams checked in with rounds of 70. Mumley and Decker prevailed on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.
Mike Mason and Jim Baugh Jr. were third with an even-par round of 72.
The balance of the leaderboard looked like this:
Craig Bowman and John Pokas, 73; Kurt Frasnelly and Gary Cunningham, 73; Kelly Rine and Bob Yazrombek, 73; John Timko and Joe Klempa, 75; Steve Wojcik and Mike Snively, 76; Ted Stupak and Jim Mahute, 77; Chris Baugh and Zach Bowman, 78; Tom Kellas and Chad Baugh, 81; Rob Schmidt and Mike Hajdukovich, 83.
The closest to the pin prizes went to Wojcik, Mike Mason, Chad Baugh and Bill Glitch.
Skins game winners were Frasnelly and Cunningham; Wojcik and Snively; Yazrombek and Rine; Mumley and Ducker and Chris Baugh and Bowman.
The best dressed prizes went to Joe Klempa and Roy Glitch.
Bill Glitch once again served as the tournament director.

PREP GOLF
The Ohio Valley Athletic Conference crowned its champions last week. Madonna, Wheeling Central, Cambridge and Wheeling Park claimed the first OVAC titles of the 2017-18 school year.
I covered the Class 3A tournament and got to spend the day riding on a cart with Barnesville athletic director Mark Cook. I was very impressed with Wheeling Central’s play and probably even more impressed by the fact that Barnesville’s administration team of superintendent Angela Hannahs, principal Ron Clark and Cook were there to support their golfers. I also saw Buckeye Trail superintendent Adam Pittis.
There were actually several fans out and about watching the players chase an OVAC title. It was very cool to see that, too.
The high school golf regular season concludes this week with the Ohio Valley Golf League championship tournament on Thursday and that sets the stage for sectional tournament play. You can read more about the sectional and postseason in this space next week.
