Eastern board sets Ohio sectional tournament sites

Teams have been placed in their respective sectional tournaments by the Eastern District Athletic Board. The tournaments, which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 24 are one-day events now, instead of two as in the past.

Barnesville and Sandy Valley have once again been selected as host sites in Division-III.

Teams heading to western Belmont County to join the host Shamrocks, include Belpre, Chesapeake, Crooksville, Federal Hocking, Nelsonville-York, Reedsville Eastern, South Point, Trimble, Waterford, Martins Ferry, Coshocton, Shenandoah, Buckeye Local, Union Local, Shadyside and Edison.

The Purple Riders are the No. 1 seed, with Coshocton second.

Set to compete at Sandy Valley are Bellaire, Newcomerstown, Bridgeport, Caldwell, Garaway, Toronto, West Muskingum, Tuscarawas Valley, Malvern, Steubenville Catholic, Fort Frye, Beallsville, Tuscarawas Central Catholic, Monroe Central, River and the host Cardinals.

The Big Reds are the top seed in Magnolia. Newcomerstown is next, followed by Bridgeport and Caldwell.

In Division II, Claymont and Steubenville high schools will once again host action.

At Big Red’s Crimson Center are Beaver Local, Minerva, River View, East Liverpool, Indian Creek, New Philadelphia, Harrison Central, Meadowbrook, Zanesville and the hosts.

The Beavers are the top seed.

Treking to Uhrichsville will be Carrollton, Indian Valley, West Holmes, St. Clairsville, Maysville, John Glenn, Cambridge, Philo and Morgan.

The Warriors are the top seed.

Brackets will be set the week of the event. The top 4 in each weight class at each site advance to district action which will take place at Heath High School for D-III wrestlers. The D-II district is also at Claymont High School.

Ohio Coatings Panther Classic

AT CONNORVILLE, 23 teams from the tri-state area have confirmed their spots in the annual Ohio Coatings Panther Classic, which is set for Saturday at Buckeye Local High School. Weigh-ins are from 7-8 a.m., with wrestling starting at 9.

Representing Ohio will be Buckeye Local, Bellaire, Bridgeport, Dublin Scioto, East Liverpool, East Palestine, Edison, Hamilton Township, Hilliard Bradley, Martins Ferry, Newcomerstown, St. Clairsville, Steubenville Catholic, Union Local and Warren Local. Pennsylvania squads include Fox Chapel, Jefferson Morgan, North Catholic, West Allegheny and Westinghouse. West Virginia schools are Brooke and Wheeling Park.

The championship finals should begin at approximately 5 p.m.

Buckeye 8 Wrestling Tournament

The Buckeye 8 wrestling tournament will be held on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Stanton Elementary School, 14890 State Route 213, Hammondsville.

Weigh-ins: will take place from 10-11a.m. Wrestling begins at noon. The format will consists of 2 five-man pools.

Doors open at 9. Adults are $5. Students are $2.

OVAC-MAC Date Set

The OVAC All-Stars will meet the MAC All-Stars on Tuesday, Mar. 13 at 7 p.m. at Brooke High School.

The pre-event banquet will be held Monday, Mar. 12 at Undo’s in Weirton, starting at 6 p.m.

OVAC Duals Thursday, Friday

The OVAC Bill Hinegardner Duals will be held Thursday at Brooke High School (Class 1A/2A and Class 4A) and Friday at the John Marshall Fieldhouse (Class 3A and Class 5A). Action begins at 6 both nights.

Rea Earns MOW at

YellowJacket Rumble

AT WILLIAMSTOWN, Weir finished second in the Bob Zide Yellowjacket Rumble at Williamstown High School as OVAC champion Caleb Rea improved to 28-4 with a victory against Bridgeport, W.Va.’s Kemo Summers in the 132-pound final.

Rea earned a fall in 2:31.

WV Class A Challenge

Madonna dominated the recent W.Va. Class ‘A’ Challenge at Ritchie County High School. The Blue Dons amassed 214.5 points to second-place Greenbrier West’s 203.5. Magnolia was fifth.

Five Madonna wrestlers stood on the podium’s top step, while two others were second.

Wilson Continues to Impress

Steubenville High School graduate Tariq Wilson may have won the biggest match of his young career at North Carolina State. The red-shirt freshman, ranked 26th in the nation at 133 pounds, knocked off Virginia’s No. 5 Jack Mueller, in a recent ACC dual meet.

Wilson, a four-time OVAC Ron Mauck Tournament champion is now 19-4.
