OFF THE TEE: Ferry graduate Chlon making presence felt at WJU
Welcome to the team, Andrew Chlon.
That must have been the reaction last week at the Oglebay Resort Intercollegiate Golf Tournament that was shortened to one day because of inclement weather.
Making his debut as a Wheeling Jesuit Cardinal, former Martins Ferry standout Andrew Chlon was impressive. He actually claimed the co-medalist honor in the event with a round of 1-under 70.
Chlon completed his undergraduate degree at West Virginia University and will play this semester and during the fall for the Cardinals as he works toward his MBA, according to WJU Sports Information.
The tournament, which featured a field of 96 players, was played on the par 71, Palmer Course.
Wheeling Jesuit finished second in the team standings, trailing the University of Charleston by two shots.
In other college golf news, former St. Clairsville standout Seth Vannoy is putting together a solid spring season at Alderson-Broaddus University. Vannoy led the Battlers by placing 35th overall in an event two weeks ago at the Saginaw Valley State Invitational. Vannoy signed for rounds of 75 and 73.
At the Findlay Invitational, which was held at the University Club of Kentucky, Vannoy posted rounds of 76 and 88 and was the second-best finisher on his squad.
River graduate Isaac Curtis has also been a steady member of the Battlers’ squad this spring, which follows up a solid fall season, too.
TEE INFORMATION
It’s my annual plea to you — the reader — of this column for help throughout the spring and summer months. This column has become a staple of our spring and summer Sunday editions. I get a lot of results from different leagues, tournaments and junior events as well as scramble listings. Anytime you have an event, an ace, know of someone from the Ohio Valley working or shining in golf outside of the area, feel free to drop me a line. If you’re hosting an event, I’d love to promote it. If you played a fabulous course with a group of buddies at Myrtle Beach, overseas, out west, let me know. Could make a good feature. Nothing is off limits if it’s local golf related.
Anyway, Off the Tee is back and will be a weekly fixture from now until through Labor Day, which will be here before we know it. My email is at the bottom of this column. I can also be reached on Twitter (@TLSportsSeth) or even on Facebook (just search my name).
