OFF THE TEE: Oglebay GC crowns first champions of ’18

Though the weather hasn’t cooperated as well as many would like, you know it’s officially golf season when you receive an email from Bill “Tice” Glitch with the results of an Oglebay Park Golf Club event.

The club kicked off its 2018 season on March 25 with 90 players taking part in the Altmeyer Funeral Home Three-Man Scramble at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course.

The team of Hunter Travis, Mark Voellinger and Joe Key carded a round of 62 to win the title by two shots over the trio of T.C. Chappalear, Thomas Chappalear and Travis Nelson.

Finishing third was the team of Ted Stupak, Adam Stupak and Doug Hennen with a 66. Tom Mitchell, Tony Campbell and Bill Piccard also finished with a 66 for fourth. In fifth was the team of Wally Chlon, Andrew Chlon and Dave Slonaker with a 67. The squad of Tim Pelley, George Melnik and Rich Humphrey was sixth with a 67.

Several skill prizes were also awarded during the course of the day. Those went to Joe McGlumphy (longest putt on No. 3), Mike Wetzell (closest to the pin on No. 5), Adam Stupak (closest to the pin on No. 7), Dan Janovich (closest to the pin on No. 13) and Jeff McLaughlin (longest putt on No. 17).

MASTER’S PREDICTION

A tradition unlike that of any other! Yes, it’s that time. The Masters tees it up at Augusta National Golf Club this week as golf’s best converge for the first major of the year.

Many believe the Masters is the greatest major of the year. Though, I am a big fan of the U.S. Open because of it’s sheer difficulty, there’s something about the Masters that separates it. Whether it’s the Green Jacket, Butler Cabin, Magnolia Lane, Amen Corner or the azaleas, the Masters is a bucket-list item for most sports fans.

As for the 2018 tournament, the betting favorite is none other than Tiger Woods. The multiple-time champion has played well this season as he’s continued to round back into form from back surgery. Though I don’t think Woods is done winning majors and will eventually catch Jack Nicklaus, I don’t think it’s going to start this week.

I am going with another multiple-time champion of the event. I look for Bubba Watson to fight off Rory McIlroy for the title. It’s going to be a Sunday to remember.

TEE INFORMATION

It’s my annual plea to you — the reader — of this column for help throughout the spring and summer months. This column has become a staple of our spring and summer Sunday editions. I get a lot of results from different leagues, tournaments and junior events as well as scramble listings. Anytime you have an event, an ace, know of someone from the Ohio Valley working or shining in golf outside of the area, feel free to drop me a line. If you’re hosting an event, I’d love to promote it. If you played a fabulous course with a group of buddies at Myrtle Beach, overseas, out west, let me know. Could make a good feature. Nothing is off limits if it’s local golf related.

Anyway, Off the Tee is back and will be a weekly fixture from now until through Labor Day, which will be here before we know it. My email is at the bottom of this column. I can also be reached on Twitter (@TLSportsSeth) or even on Facebook (just search my name).
