OFF THE TEE: Landtiser, Minor win Belmont Hills event crown

The Belmont Hills Country Club tournament schedule resumed last weekend with the Spring 6-6-6 event, competing with two flights.

The duo of Larry Landtiser and Rennie Minor teamed for the victory with a round of 63. They were two shots better than Zach Azallion and J.C. Thrash, who posted a round of 65. Clay Bethel and Joe Jeffries were third with a 66.

The second flight winners were Rick Frio and Les Delloma, who shot a 63. James Hall and Rob Anderson posted a 67 to finish second, while Jack Carpenter and Bill Sokolowski were part of the tie for second with a 67.

Frio and Delloma were the overall winners, while Landtiser and Minor were second overall.

The closest to the pin winners on No. 2 were Rick Frio, Chuck Poindexter and J.C. Thrash.

JUNIOR GOLF

Some junior tours cranked up last weekend when the First National Bank Junior Golf Tour visited Edgewater Golf Course in Minerva for an 18-hole event on the par 72 layout.

Martins Ferry’s Luke Krol finished tied for fourth overall with a round of 81. Harrison Central’s Clint Heavilin posted an 85 and Barnesville’s Payne Johnson carded a 91.

In the 13-15 year old division, St. Clairsville’s Will Foster posted a round of 91, while Harrison Central’s Sam Santille posted a 93. Wheeling Park’s Gavin Goodrich notched a 97.

OGLEBAY PARK GOLF CLUB

The club held its fifth tournament of the season at Cadiz Country Club with 68 golfers taking part in the event, which utilized a two-man, 50 percent bestball format.

Mack Maguire and Mike Wilson shot a 63 to win by five shots over a trio of teams. Mike Wetzel and Bernie Marcellus finished in second after a score-card playoff. Grant Van Laar and Mike Pietranton also checked in with a 68 along with Bob Potts and Ray Hornick.

John Tarr and John Monto posted a 69, while Frank Bland and Greg Woodfin signed for a 70. Phil Saseen and Ray McKenzie posted a 71, while Robbie Evans and Doug Miller recorded a 72.

Leo Bradford (No. 2), Mike Pietranton (No. 8), Tim Pelley (No. 11) and Wayne Stein (No 13) recorded the closest to the pins during the round.

Stein had the shot of the tournament, however. His closest to the pin was actually an ace.

WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB

The Elm Grove Civics-sponsored event was held last Sunday. Gary Mercer posted a 68, while Art Lightner was a shot back with a 69. Rounding out the top five, including ties, were Nick Klamut (70), Rod Eikey (74), Rich Colley (75) and Jim Druschel (75).

In the handicap scoring, Jim Ennis posted a 65, while Chris Bommer also posted a 65. Steve Usenick shot a 66 to finish third. Josh Green (68) and Bill Piccard (70) rounded out the top five.

ACE

RON HELMS of Glen Dale recorded an ace on the 162-yard fourth hole at BecWood Hills Golf Course on May 17. He used a Nike 6-iron for his shot on the par three, which was witnessed by Tom Powell, Steve Edgehouse and Jim Blazy.

ELKS JUNIOR TOURNAMENT

The Wheeling Elks Lodge #28 is hosting its annual Junior Golf Tournament at Oglebay Park’s Par 3 course on Wednesday, June 20 for players aged 10-18 and the event is limited to the first 80 applicants. The event is free to enter and refreshments and awards will be presented following the round. The event will begin at 10:30 a.m. and is open to males and females. The older kids will play on the Crispin Course. The divisions are 10-12, 13-15, 16-18. The event also includes a new 7-9 year old division for the first time. SALT FORK JUNIOR

TOURNAMENT

The annual Salt Fork Junior Golf Tournament will be held on Tuesday, June 12 at Salt Fork State Park Golf Course near Cambridge. There will be age divisions (17-18, 15-16, 13-14) for boys and 16-18 and 13-15 for girls. The entry fee is $30 with checks payable to Meadowbrook Golf Boosters. COLLEGE GOLF

WHEELING NATIVE Thadd Obecny put the finishing touches on an impressive collegiate career in the NCAA Division I regional last weekend. Obecny, who played for Coastal Carolina, shot a 1-over par, 73 in his final collegiate round. All told, he finished tied for 58th with a 5-over par. He signed for rounds of 72, 76 and 73. He finished the season with 14 rounds of par or better and five top-20 finishes. He closed with a scoring average of 73.90, which is the 10th best in Coastal Carolina program history.

GOLF SCRAMBLES

Bellaire Sons of Italy Scramble Slated

The 19th annual Sons of Italy Bellaire Lodge #754 will hold its annual golf scramble to benefit Alzheimers & Cooley’s Anemia Charities on Monday, June 4 at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Golf Course. The entry fee is $200 per team, which includes golf, cart, refreshments on the course and dinner following the round. Bellaire Touchdown

Club Scramble Slated

The Bellaire Touchdown Club will be sponsoring their 12th. annual golf outing on June 30 at the Fairway River Links. The entry fee is $60.00 per person or $240.00 per team. The cost includes cart, lunch, beverages and a dinner after the scramble. Muskingum Golf Outing Slated

The Muskingum University Athletic Department is hosting its annual golf outing at EagleSticks Golf Course in Zanesville on Thursday, July 26th at noon. The cost is $100 per golfer or $400 per foursome. Price includes 18 holes of golf, drink tickets, and dinner.
