OFF THE TEE: Niekro Classic Golf Scramble turns 20 this June
One of the staples of the Ohio Valley’s summer golf schedule is turning 20.
The annual Niekro Classic Golf Scramble, which benefits Bridgeport schools, is slated for Friday, June 22 at Belmont Hills Country Club. A shotgun start is slated for 8:30 a.m. and the cost to enter is $100 per player for a four-man team.
There will once again be an open division and an Bridgeport division. Sponsorships for the event are also available.
The defending champions are the team of Lou Caliguiri, Michael Dillmore, Mike Anthony and Jade Waligura.
OGLEBAY PARK GOLF CLUB
The club held its third tournament of the season with a field of 96 players taking part in the Ye Olde Alpha event, which was held at the Speidel Golf Club.
Mike Wilson claimed the overall title with a round of 73. He was two shots better than Mike Wetzel and three shots clear of Bob Potts. Matt Hines and Roger Waialie both signed for a 77 to round out the top five.
Bryan Myers (78), Mike Ricci (78), Joe Doerr (79), Bill Glitch (79) and George Templin (82) rounded out the top 10.
In the handicap scoring portion of the event, Mike Anthony prevailed with a 66. John Tarr (68), Tom Gaudino (69), R.J. Zitzelsberger (70) and John Monto (71) rounded out the top five.
The closest to the pins went to Tony Campbell (No. 4), Dana Brooks (No. 11) and Mike Ricci (No. 15). The longest drives were recorded by Jim Tysk (No. 2) and R.J. Zitzelsberger (No. 2).
Skins were won by Mike Wilson (No. 2 and No. 9), Bob Potts (No. 3 and No. 17), Chris Yahn (No. 11) and Roger Waialie (No. 12).
OGLEBAY PARK WOMEN’S GOLF
The club is beginning plans for its annual golf tournament at the Crispin Center, which has grown in recent years. A portion of the proceeds from the event will be donated to Health Right. WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB
The club has held several events in the last few weeks as the season kicks into full swing.
On April 29, the Country Pride Restaurant event was held.
Roger Kupfer prevailed with a round of 73. He was a stroke better than Bruno DeCrease and eight clear of Dick Moore. Shawn Schwertfeger (85) and Lloyd Carmichael (90) rounded out the top five.
In the handicap scoring portion of the event, Art Lightner prevailed with a 71. He was two shots better than John Bryan and Bill Kerns. Josh Green (74) and Steve Usenick (84) rounded out the top five.
On April 25, the Elm Grove Eagles #1891 event was staged. Jim Druschel prevailed with a 32 and was six shots better than George Melnick. Chris Bommer was third with a 38, which was better than DeCrease (38) and Lightner (40).
The handicap scoring went to Dick Moore with a 34. Jim Ennis was second with a 36 and Tony Campbell was third with a 38.
On April 22, the Kupfer Brothers Logging event took place. Lightner and Kupfer teamed for the title with a round of 59. They were nine shots better than Melnik and Eikey. Bommer and Mercver were third with a 68, which was shots ahead of fourth-place Stauver and Moore.
In the handicap scoring, Kerns and Green won by two shots over Witzbacher and Usenick with a 61. Mitchell and Piccard were third with a 63.
On April 18, the Miklas Meat Market event was staged. Moore prevailed with a 34 after a score-card playoff against Kupfer. Melnik finished third with a 36. Rick Richmond (37) and Lightner rounded out the top five with rounds of 37 and 40.
Ryan Richmond prevailed in the handicap scoring with a 32, while Bill Piccard was third with a 33.
SCRAMBLES
Buckeye Local is sponsoring a three-man golf scramble to benefit former Buckeye Local High School staff member, Jeff Vinci. Vinci, who is battling cancer, is a former assistant athletic director and maintenance supervisor.
The scramble will be held on Saturday, May 26 at Paradise Hills Golf Course. The entry fee is $40 per player. Hot dogs and soft drinks will be provided. The event is BYOB.

American Legion Post 159 Scramble
Set for May 6
The American Legion Post 159 Baseball Scramble will be held on Sunday, May 6 at Cadiz Country Club. The annual event is moving to the Harrison County layout, which should provide a challenge to defending champions Jimmy Baugh Jr., Chad Baugh, Tommy Baugh and Ryan Clark. The Outback will cater a post-round dinner at the American Legion Hall in St. Clairsville after the round. Starbucks will provide coffee and pasteries prior to the tournament, which tees off at 9 a.m. The cost is $80 per person. Corporate sponsorships are available for $500, which includes a team in the event. Hole sponsors are available for $100. JM Basketball Golf Scramble Planned
The John Marshall Basketball Golf Classic will be held on Saturday, May 12 at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course. Registration begins at 10 a:30 a.m. and the shotgun start is planned for noon. The entry fee is $75 and it includes golf, cart, dinner and drinks. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams. There will also be skill contests such as closest to the pin, longest drive and closest to the pin on a second shot.
Dowler Scramble Slated for May 14
The seventh annual Thomas R. Dowler Memorial Classic Golf Scramble will be held on Monday, May 14 at Belmont Hills Country Club. The entry fee is $100 per player and the day will consist of lunch at 11, golf, beginning at noon and dinner following the round at 5:30 p.m. Many skill contests will be held throughout the day. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. The proceeds from the scramble benefit the Thomas R. Dowler Fund, which supports students, faculty, programs and facilities of Belmont College. Flushing Masonic Lodge Hosting Annual Scramble
The Flushing Masonic Lodge will hold its annual scholarship golf scramble on Saturday, May 19 at Cadiz Country Club. The event will begin with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start, but hot dogs will be served during registration, which begins at 11:30 a.m. The cost to enter is $70 per man and that includes a skins game. Following the round, a steak dinner will be served with awards and door prizes to be presented in the clubhouse. Beverages will be served on the course. All proceeds from the event benefit the $500 scholarships, which are presented to Union Local and Harrison Central High School students. Shadyside Booster Golf Scramble will be held on Saturday, May 19 at Moundsville Country Club. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The entry fee is $240 per 4-man team. Food and beverages provided. Sign ups are being accepted at Eddie’s Barber Shop in Shadyside.
Sardis VFD Scramble Set
The Sardis Volunteer Fire Department will be sponsoring its seventh annual golf scramble on Saturday, May 19 at the Fairway Riverside Golf Course in Sardis. The four-player, better ball scramble will begin at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. The top three teams will receive a cash prize. The entry fee is $200 for a team, which includes golf, cart, breakfast items, lunch and a t-shirt. There will also be door prizes and raffles. The inaugural TE Church Golf Scramble will be held at Cadiz Country Club on Saturday, May 26 with play scheduled to begin with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams and there will also be skill prizes, including a chance to win a car or a Harley Davidson motorcycle for an ace.
