OFF THE TEE: Plans under way for 23rd annual BMAC Golf Classic
MOUNDSVILLE — As professional golf’s second major wraps up today at Shinnecock Hills, attention locally turns to a plethora of big events.
The 20th annual Niekro Classic is set for Friday at Belmont Hills Country Club, then, in less than a month, another major event event tees off across the river.
On Thursday, July 19, the 23rd annual BMAC (Belmont Mountaineer Athletic Club) Golf Classic gets under way at Moundsville Country Club with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.
The bellwether fundraiser for the bi-state West Virginia University athletics support group is an important venture in aiding student-athletes in their quest to becoming well-rounded, according to John S. Marshall, who heads the local BMAC chapter, along with John Budinscak.
“We have as many sponsors lined up now as we had all of last year,” he said. “We have great corporate support.”
Greens fees are $300 per team or $75 per player, with entries for both Open and Corporate Cup competition. Individual entries are also welcome.
Entry fee includes 18 holes of golf, half cart, on-course beverages and post-round meal.
Marshall said 10 foursomes are already registered, so he anticipates the 18 that competed last summer will be surpassed.
“The event is becoming more well-known,” be expressed.
During the day, a drawing for two tickets for two Mountaineer football games will take place.
New this year is a putting contest, with putting cones sponosred by the Mountaineer Athletic Club.
“We’re always looking for things to upgrade to make it a good golfing experience,” Marshall said.
