OFF THE TEE: Belmont Hills hosts 50th annual Member- Guest Invite
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Many people believe the highlight of the Belmont Hills Country Club golf calendar is the annual club championship, which is scheduled for next month.
If you’re talking to many of the members, they’d beg to differ. The actual highlight of the summer season was staged last weekend on the challenging par 72 layout west of the St. Clairsville. The 50th annual BHCC Member-Guest Invitational was three days of golf, fun and impressive showings.
The tournament plays match-play in flights on Friday and Saturday morning and then the flight winners play a tournament in the afternoon to crown the overall winners.
The 2018 champion member is Brian Delloma and his guest was Ian McClain. The pair has been impressive each of the last three years. They won the title in 2016 and finished second last summer.
The Delloma-McClain team finished with 27 points in flight play, fighting off Larry Blake and Dick Robinson by less than four points. Bryan Woodford and Shawn Monroe were third in the flight with 22.5 points.
The winning duo held off second-flight champions Jack Carpenter and David Johnson, who also posted 27 points in flight play, for the title.
Other flight winners were: Steve Mercer and Ryan Tomolonis (third flight), Mike McTeague and Denny Lewis (fourth flight) and John Vota and Ted Bouyoucas (fifth flight). McTeague and Lewis, who posted a tourney-high 28 points, were the third-place finishers in the flight round.
The event actually gets under way with a series of events on Thursday
Ted Showalter and Mark Landini won the best-ball event with a 64 on the opening day, while Delloma and McClain gave a glimpse of what was to come by virtue of their runner-up finish.
McTeague (No. 2), Orin Davis (No. 7), Bill Piko (No. 11) and McClain (No. 14) were the Great Par 3 Shootout qualifiers, while McClain, Showalter and Sam Armann were the top three finishers in the closest to the pin winners.
On Friday, the Great Par 3 Shootout qualifiers were Landini (No. 2), Mercer (No. 7), Trey Wilcox (No. 11) and Terry Carson (No. 14).
The alternate shot tournament winners were David and Betz. Jeremy Uhlenake and Davey Wells finished second, while Dave Humphreys Jr. and Todd Blake were third.
Piko won the Great Par 3 shootout, while David was second. Terry Carson was third.
