OFF THE TEE: Kalkreuth takes over former Stoney Hollow this weekend
WHEELING — One of the major golf tournaments on the Ohio Valley calendar is set to tee it off this weekend at Oglebay Park for the 46th consecutive year.
For the first time, however, Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal is serving as the sponsor of the event, which will be held Saturday and Sunday with the Palmer and Jones courses at Spiedel hosting a round each day.
Though you may be thinking, ‘there’s been a Kalkreuth golf event before.’ Yes, that’s true, but that event was taken over by Bordas & Bordas and held last month at Crispin.
Kalkreuth took over the event that was formerly called the Stoney Hollow Amateur Golf Championship. Stoney Hollow had served as the chief sponsor for the event for the past 18 yeards. Other past major sponsors for the tournament were Stone & Thomas from 1972-84; Figaretti’s from 1985-1988 and United Dairy from 1989-1999.
Though it’s spot on the calendar is different, the fact that the proceeds from the Kalkreuth will benefit the Easter Seals as they have since 2011. Kalkreuth has already guaranteed a donation of at least $25,000, which will increase its total donation to $80,000 since 2011.
While Easter Seals certainly benefits from the event, the players in the field do, too. Upwards of $15,000 in prize money will be spread across all of the flights for the winners. Should a player not win, he will still receive obviously a round of golf on each of the courses during the tournament, dinner after both rounds, a complimentary cooler stuffed with gifts and a golf shirt.
The flights for the event are championship, first flight, senior flight and super senior flight. The junior champion will receive the Johnny Wilson Memorial Trophy.
Tournament Director Dan Tennant expects another impressive field of players, including several past champions. Included are both Larry Lis Jr. and Bryan Myers.
Tennant also expressed his appreciation to the event’s sponsors, which greatly aid the tournament’s ability to make such a sizeable donation to Easter Seals.
“Kalkreuth is able to sponsor this tournament and make the donation to Easter Seals with the help of many of our vendor business partners, especially our two co-title sponsors ABC Supply and Johns Manville,” Tennant said. “Since 2015, Kalkreuth has held a vendor invitational for our donating vendor business partners on the Friday before the tournament and will continue this tradition this year on Friday.”
Applications are still being taken up to end of day Wednesday . Applications are available at the Speidel Golf Club, Crispin Golf Course and the Hole ‘n Run. Applications can be found online at oglebaygc.com.
