OFF THE TEE: Oglebay Park Golf Club crowns Clark as champion

The Oglebay Park Golf Club hosted the Main Street Bank Club Championship event last weekend. The two-day tournament was split between the Spiedel Golf Course and Crispin course with the former hosting the opening round.

Bob Clark had two impressive rounds of golf en route to shooting a 9-under, 133. he opened with a 3-under, 69 at Jones and shared the lead with Bryan Myers and Brooke Garrison. He followed that up with 64 at the scoreable Crispin layout to fight off Myers, who settled for second with a round of 66. Myers went out in 36, but put up a charge on the back side of the course with a 30, which was the low round on that side.

Garrison finished third overall at 3-under for the weekend. Mike Wilson (140), Jay Davis (141) also finished under par.

Joe Doerr (149), Bill Glitch (150), Noah Sievertson (152), Derrick Harrison (157), R.J. Zitzelsberger (164) rounded out the top 10 in the championship flight.

In the First Flight, Jim Tysk finished with a 126 to hold off John Tarr by four shots. Joe Ernst and Mike Ricci finished tied for third at 132.

The Second Flight crown went to John Dalek at 130. Bill Mumley and Brad Mitchell tied for second wsith a 134 and Mike Kolakowski was fourth at 135.

Thomas Chappelear and Morgan Coast tied for the crown in the third flight with a 128, which considered handicap. Bill Piko was third at 138.

There were also several skill prizes awarded. Those went to Bob Clark (Closest to the pin on No. 2 Saturday), Joe Hartman (closest to the pin on No. 4 Saturday), Joe Doerr and Bill Glitch (closest to the pin No. 5 on Sunday); Doug Miller (closest to the pin on No. 7 on Sunday); Todd Nickoles (closest to the pin on No. 7, Saturday); Morgan Coast (longest putt on No. 8, Saturday); Tom Mitchell (closest to the pin on No. 10 on Sunday); Mike Wilson (closest to the pin on No. 11, Saturday); Jim Dailer (closest to the pin on No. 13, Sunday); Bill Glitch (closest to the pin on No. 15 on Saturday) and Cecil Chiplinski (longest putt made on No. 17, Sunday).

RECORD SCORE

Thadd Obecny has been posting low numbers basically his entire life at Wheeling Country Club. He tamed it again in a big way last Wednesday when he signed for a round of 59. It’s the third time in his career that Obecny, who played at Wheeling Park and then Coastal Carolina, has posted that number. That equaled Obecny’s own Wheeling CC course record. With his collegiate career complete, Obecny is beginning a professional golf career.

WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB

The Greco’s Bernie Schultz Memorial event was held, utilizing a Scotch, Bestball, scramble format.

Bommer and Mercer teamed for the victory with a round of 64, which was five shots better than Moore and Stauver. Ennis and Green signed for a 70 to finish third, while Haught and Piccard were fourth with a 73. Rounding out the top five was Kerns and J. Green with a 77.

Wurtzbacher and Usenick won the handicap scoring title with a 58, which was the same score posted by McLauglin and Klamut. Kosar and Domyan were third with a 60.

Jim Kupfer sponsored an event last Wednesday that attracted a large field of players. Rod Eikey won the 9-hole event with a round of 33. He was three shots better than Chris Bommer and six shots ahead of Jim Druschel. Joe Wurtzbacher and Dick Moore rounded out the top five with rounds of 40 and 41, respectively.

In the handicap scoring portion of the event, Steve Usenick prevailed with a 32. Jim Ennis was second with a 35 and Bob Green was third with a 35. Rich Colley (35) and Jim Kupfer (37) rounded out the top five.

ACE

Jack Donahue aced the 145-yard, 14th hole at Becwood Hills Golf Course on Aug. 2. He used a Hogan 2-iron for his feat, which was witnessed by Buzz Donahue, Gary Schuetz and Frank Pasden.
