OFF THE TEE: Oglebay Park Golf Club crowns tournament winners
The club’s eighth tournament of the season was held last Sunday with 85 players taking part in a tournament that utilized a format of 50 percent handicap, best-ball at Crispin.
Winning the title was Jay Davis and Mike Bogers, who posted a 59. Shawn Pennybacker and Bill Piko finished second with a 61, while Joe Hartman and Jim Tysk, who also signed for a 61, were third. Larry Bonar and Doug Richards were fourth with a 62, which was a spot better than Tom Gaudino and Mike Neal, who also signed for a 62.
The closest to the pin prizes went to B.J. Widmer (No. 2), Penn Kurtz (no. 5), Adam Cowser (No. 7), Jeff McLaughlin (No. 10) and Tom Gaudino (No. 13). Skins were won by Kurtz (No. 5) and Dan Oliver (No. 12).
It should also be noted that Kurtz’ closest to the pin could have only been tied by another player in the field because his shot was an ace.
WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB
The Perkins Restaurant event was held with an 18-hole tournament, featuring medal and handicap scoring.
Roger Kupfer prevailed by three shots over Rod Eikey with a round of 70. Nick Klamut was third overall with a 74. Joe Wurtzbacher and Rich Colley finished fourth and fifth, respectively with a round of 76 and 79.
In the handicap scoring portion of the event, Chris Bommer prevailed with a round of 67, while Ron Heatherly was second with a 68.
Joe Haught finished third with a 68. Dick Moore (73) was fourth, while Russ Travis and Steve Usenick tied for fifth with a round of 73.
The Club Tournament was held last Wednesday with Chris Bommer prevailing by a shot over Steve Boyd with a 35. George Melnik (37), Rod Eikey (37) and Robbie Evans (38) rounded out the top five in the medal scoring.
In the handicap scoring, Bruce Melnik won by two shots with a 32. Mike DeSantis was second with a 34 and Bob Green finished third with a 35. John Bryan was fourth with a 35 and Joe Wurtzbacher, Ray Coe, Terry Younkins and Joe Haught all tied for fifth with a 36.
DONAHUE SCRAMBLE
The annual Tom Donahue Memorial Golf Scramble was held last Sunday at BecWood Golf Course with 17 teams taking part in the event, which is sponsored by American Legion Post 52.
The winning team was comprised of Tom Donahue, Brian Carter, Scott Wells and Dick Cope. Finishing second was the team of Jack Donahue, Frank Pasden, Troy Kubovich and Nathan Basnett. Third place went to Tom Powell, Ron Helms, Jimmy Blazey and Bill Fox.
Winning the longest drive contests were Larry Boroski and Scott Lefkay. The closest to the pins went to Ryan Donahue and Larry Priebe.
