Off The Tee: Scramble slated to honor Ducker and benefit cancer research

On Friday, more than 160 golfers arrived at Belmont Hills Country Club to support Bridgeport Local Schools with the annual Niekro Scramble.

On Saturday, Oct. 12, area golfers have the chance to pay homage to a Bridgeport High graduate, Ron Ducker, who passed away in December of 2017 from cancer. The annual Ron Ducker Memorial Golf Outing will be held at Cumberland Trail Golf Course in Pataskala. Ducker is a 1978 Bridgeport High School graduate.

The proceeds from the event will be donated to the Urban and Shelley Meyer Fund for Cancer Research at the Ohio State Medical Center. The entry fee for the tournament, which will begin with a noon shotgun start, is set at $75 per player. After the round, dinner, entertainment and prizes will be awarded. WEST VIRGINIA OPEN

Former Wheeling Park standout Thadd Obecny finished sixth in this week’s West Virginia Open held in Vienna. He fired three straight rounds of 1-under, 72. He played in the final group on Friday but finished 14 shots behind David Bradshaw, who claimed victory for the fourth straight year.

WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB

The Wheeling Volkswagon/Subaru event was held on June 12. Stephen Gretchen prevailed with a round of 34. He was three shots better than Dan Willming and four clea rof both Larry Goodnight and Robbie Evans. Dick Moore, Rich Colley and Rich Humphrey all tied for fifth with a 39.

The handicap scoring crown went to Phil Demalio who posted a 31. He was two shots better than Joe Haught and Jerry Daugherty.

The TimberGrove Construction 3-man scramble was held last Sunday. Davis, Bommer an Mercer teamed for an impressive round of 56 to win by a shot over Evans, Miller and Melnik. Third place went to Lightner, Kupfer and Heatherly with a 58.

The handicap scoring crown went to Willming, Domyan and Kosar with a 51, while Ennis, Green and Klamut posted a 52. Haught, Demailo and Piccard all posted a 52 for third.

ELKS JUNIOR TOURNAMENTS

The Wheeling Elks Lodge #28 is sponsoring a pair of junior golf tournaments. A par 3 tourney will be held at Oglebay Park on Wednesday, June 26 for ages 7-9 years old. Registration will run from 10:30 a.m. until the shotgun start at 11 a.m. The top three placers will receive an award. Refreshments will be provided after the round at the Haller Shelter.

An 18-hole event will be held at Crispin Course for players 10-18 on the same day. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. The 10-12 year olds will play from the gold tees, the 13-15 year olds will play from the white and 16-18 from the blue (for boys). For the girls, the 10-12 will play the gold tees, the 13-15 will play the reds and the 16-18 will play the reds. The top three players will receive awards and refreshments will be provided after the round at the Haller Shelter.

JUNIOR TOURNAMENT

The annual event will be held on Monday, June 24 at Cambridge Country Club. There will be four divisions for boys and three for girls. The 14-15 year olds and 16-18 year olds will be 18 holes, while the younger players will tee it up for nine holes. The entry fee is $40 for 18-hole event and $30 for 9 holes. A $500 scholarship will be awarded to the low male and female who has already graduated. The entry fee includes a golf, a shirt, cookout following the round. BELMONT HILLS

JUNIOR TOURNAMENT

The annual event will be held on Monday, July 22 at Belmont Hills and feature three age groups (17-18, 14-16 and 12-13) for boys and two age groups (15-18 and 12-14) for girls. Awards will be presented to the top three finishers in all boys and girls divisions. The entry fee is $30 and checks can be made payable to Barnesville Golf Parents. Lunch will be provided to all competitors and is available for purchase to spectators.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start and the deadline for entry is Monday, July 15.

THE BELLAIRE Touchdown Club is sponsoring its 13th Annual Golf Scramble on June 29 at the Fairway River Links. The entry fee is $60 per per person or $240 per team. The cost includes cart, lunch, beverages and a dinner after the scramble. Entry forms can be picked up at Denny’s Blue Angel, Gulla’s Lunch, Around The World Gourmet Marketplace (formerly Frizzi’s Market) and the Quick Stop in Neffs. THE 24TH annual BMAC Golf Classic will be held at Moundsville Country Club on July 18. The event will have a shotgun start at 10 a.m. with a meal following play. The entry fee is $75 per player or $300 per team. There will once again be competitions for the open and corporate cups. The entry fee includes golf, cart, beverages and food. The event will also feature a new addition with the Belmont Savings Bank Chamber Challenge, which will be a putting contest. The winning team will receive a cash prize. Sponsorship opportunities for the event are also available, including cart sponsor ($500), $250 prize or registration sponsors and $100 hole sponsors.

THE NINTH annual Vance Diehl Memorial Scholarship Scramble will be held on Saturday, July 20 at Cadiz Country Club. The entry fee is $65 per player and a shotgun start is planned for 8 a.m. The cost includes golf, cart, refreshments on the course, lunch at the turn, dinner and prizes. Diehl was a teacher, coach and athletic trainer at Martins Ferry High School for 30 years. All proceeds from the event benefit a scholarship for a Martins Ferry senior. THE ST. Clairsville American Legion Post 159 inaugural golf tournament and pig roast will be held on July 21 at Cadiz Country. The cost of the golf tournament is $360 for per team or $90 per player. This includes golf, cart, lunch, beverages and pig roast. There will be skill contests held, too. Sponsorships are also available. If a person desires to attend the pig roast only, he or she can pay $30. More informatio can be attained by contacting the St. Clairsville American Legion.

THE ANNUAL Tom Donahue Memorial Classic Golf Scramble will be held at BecWood Hills on Saturday, July 27. The entry fee is $60 per player or $240 per team. The cost includes cart, golf, food, refreshments, prizes and door prizes. THE BARNESVILLE Hospital Scramble will be played on Aug. 2 at Belmont Hills Country Club. A shotgun start will be held at 10 a.m. and awards and dinner are slated for 3 p.m. The 17th annual event is the largest fundraiser of the year for the hospital auxiliary.

The cost to enter is $120 per player and it includes golf, lunch, dinner, prizes and refreshments on the course. There are also four levels of sponsorships available.

THE FOURTH annual Bridgeport Wrestling Scramble will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7 at Paradise Hills Golf Course in Yorkville. The event will begin at 9 a.m. and costs $60 per player or $240 a team. Players will receive golf, cart, food, beverages and door prizes. Hole sponsorships for $50 are also available.
