Wojcik returning home to launch AAU program

WHEELING — Basketball has always been a major focus in Dave Wojcik’s life. The Wheeling native is now ready to embark on a new hoop challenge. Wojcik is not coaching collegiately or in the prep ranks for the first time since 1991. He stepped down as head coach at San Jose State in July, despite the program showing impressive upward movement in his four seasons and coming off the most conference wins the school has seen in 21 years. Wojcik will now be returning home, primed to give the Ohio Valley and tri-state basketball community something it is sorely missing — a first-class ...

Kinnick looking to end playing career in style

Fifth-year seniors — in today’s culture — are often times hard to find. That’s especially true at the Division II level. St. Clairsville graduate Matt Kinnick, however, defies that theory. The former Red Devil, who helped guide his alma mater to the Division IV state championship game in 2012, is embarking on his fifth year at West Virginia State University and is set to be the Yellow Jackets’ starting quarterback for the third straight season. “Honestly, it’s kind of hard to believe,” Kinnick said of his upcoming final season. “I think we have six, fifth-year ...

Bell primed for sophomore season at A&T

WHEELING — Elijah Bell prides himself more on winning than personal numbers. The Wheeling Park grad, however, has produced a lot of both during his still-evolving football career. The 6-1, 221-pound wide receiver helped lead Park to the Class AAA West Virginia state football crown in 2015, marking the first in Patriots’ history. Bell topped the state that season with 1,214 receiving yards and 17 TDs. In the process, he was accorded the Randy Moss Award, given annually to the top wide receiver in the state. He was also named the USA Today Offensive Player of the Year for West ...

OVAC: 75 years and going strong

WHEELING -- The Ohio Valley Athletic Conference is deeply etched into the fabric of the Ohio Valley. So much so, the nation's largest functional prep conference is celebrating its 75th year of operation. Such longevity in a time of widespread athletic transiency speaks volumes of both the OVAC's founding fathers and its current leadership. The OVAC was organized in 1943 with F.W. Bowen, J.E. Ewing, J.C. Greer, M.S. Hattala, B.G. Lockhart, J.V. Nelson, Charles Petty, C.F. Walker and C.S. Wiseman among those responsible for its basic conception. Wiseman became the conference's first ...

MORGANTOWN — Dr. A.J. Monseau is passionate about medicine and just as passionate about athletics. It is no wonder the Wheeling Park grad is excited about his new job. The WVU Emergency Medicine and Sports Medicine physician will now be charged with leading the WVU staff of team physicians while working in conjunction with the athletic training staff in providing healthcare to all student-athletes. His new position is totally encompassing as it will include injury ...
