Reese shines in classroom, swimming pool

INDIANAPOLIS - Samm Reese is an NCAA Division I All-American. Reese is a Purdue Boilermaker with Martins Ferry roots. The talented junior from Granger, Ind., earned All-America honors for the Purdue University women’s swimming & diving team at the NCAA Championships last week. Reese placed 11th among a field of 50 divers in the 1-meter diving event, posting a score of 279.7. That clinched her first career All-America honor. OFF THE TEE: Scramble to benefit Post 159 baseball planned

A new scramble is set for Saturday, May 6 at Belmont Hills Country Club. An event to benefit the St. Clairsville American Legion Post 159 baseball team, which is made up of players from all over Belmont County, will be held with the field capped at 36 teams. The scramble will begin with a shot-gun start at 8:45 a.m. The entry fee is $80 per player, which includes golf, cart, skins game, food and beverages on the course and a post-round meal. WHEELING — Tom Grall impacted the lives of countless West Liberty student-athletes. That point was hammered home when more than 40 of his former Hilltopper players came back to the Route 88 institution to pay homage in a memorial tribute for the coaching legend Saturday morning. Grall, who died this past January, was the ultra-successful head swimming coach for the ‘Toppers while also being a highly regarded defensive coordinator in football. Lewicki named D-III hockey player of year

ADRIAN, Mich. — A brilliant four-year career ended in heartbreak fashion for Kristin Lewicki. The Moundsville native has skated her way to becoming the face of the Adrian College hockey team. Her final game last weekend, however, delivered a tough pill to swallow. Very tough. Lewicki's Bulldogs fell to Plattsburgh State, 4-3, in overtime in the NCAA Division III national championship game. It marked the fourth straight title for the No. 1 ranked Cardinals.
