WJU wrestling team finish 4-0 in JC Duals
It was a productive opening weekend for the Wheeling Jesuit wrestling team.
While the Cardinals finished 4-0 in the John Carroll Duals, it was an especially good weekend for one Cardinal, in particular.
Martins Ferry grad Damon Outward returned to the mats for the first time since his freshman season after sitting out 2014-15 as a redshirt.
Outward. who competed at 141 pounds, made the most of his return, finishing 4-0 in the event. He posted decisions by scores of 3-2, 8-5, 8-7 and then closed out the tournament with a pin in 3:57.
“It’s very nice to have Damon back in action,” Doyle said. “Damon is very dangerous and always looking to score more.”
The Cardinals return to the mats on Saturday at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational. They’ll get their first big test on Nov. 19 when they make the short trip up Route 88 to take on rival West Liberty.

DIVISION I
DAN MONTEROSO, Purdue – St. Clairsville grad made 1 catch for 13 yards last week in a loss to Illinois.
SHAQ PETTEWAY, West Virginia – Steubenville grad recorded three tackles, including 1 for loss in last week’s victory against Texas Tech.
NAJEE MURRAY, Kent State – Steubenville grad posted two tackles and broke up a pass in the loss to Buffalo.
JERRID MARHEFKA, Ohio – St. Clairsville product caught one pass for 31 yards in last week’s loss to Bowling Green. He played in this past Tuesday’s game against Kent.
DIVISION I – FCS
AKIL BLOUNT, Florida A&M – Linsly grad recorded a team-high 12 tackles in a loss to Hampton.
MARK DODD, Lafayette – Linsly grad posted three tackles in a loss to Colgate on senior day.
DIVISION II
MATT KINNICK, West Virginia State – St. Clairsville grad completed 20-of-40 passes for 206 yards and a touchdown in a loss to Concord.
COREY ERNEST, West Liberty – St. Clairsville grad started once again at guard on the Hilltoppers’ offensive line.
MARCUS SCHUMACHER, West Liberty – Monroe Central product made the most of his final game on the Hilltop by recording 10 tackles, including 9 solo stops.
DAREE GOODWIN, West Liberty – Wheeling Park grad caught 3 passes for 62 yards in the Hilltoppers’ loss to Glenville.
KANE BOROSKI, West Liberty – Linsly grad had two tackles in the Hilltoppers’ loss eight days ago.
BRENTON COLABELLA, West Liberty – Steubenville Central grad appeared and threw four passes in last week’s loss.
MIKE BERARDI, West Liberty – John Marshall grad started once again at center for the Hilltoppers.
TANNER WRIGHT, Glenville State – River grad had three punts for 128 yards, which is a 42.7 yard average.
STEPHEN ROGALSKI, West Virginia Wesleyan – Magnolia product caught one pass for 67 yards and a touchdown in last week’s win against UVA-Wise.
ALEC BUCHMELTER, West Virginia Wesleyan – Brooke grad had one tackle for the Bobcats last week.
CHRIS STEPHENS, Alderson-Broaddus – Linsly grad had one carry for 4 yards in a loss to Charleston last week.
ZACH PHILLIPS, Gannon – Wheeling Park product completed 9-of-21 passes for 85 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed 19 times for 58 yards in a loss to IUP.
GEREMY PAIGE, Gannon – Wheeling Park grad checked in with five tackles and a sack in a loss to IUP.
VONDELL BELL, California, Pa. – Wheeling Park product had six tackles in last week’s game.
DIVISION III
DALTON SECREST, Marietta – Beallsville High product recorded five tackles and had a quarterback hurry in the Pioneers’ victory against Muskingum.
BRETT ROSEN, Muskingum – River High grad posted 10 tackles in a loss to Marietta. His total tied for second highest on the team. He also had half a sack.
NICK ASTURI, Muskingum – River High product played in the Muskies’ loss against Marietta and had one tackle.
JACOB CLARK, Muskingum – Shadyside High grad once again started along the offensive line for the Muskies.
LESHAWN LUKE, Mt. Union – Steubenville grad had two tackles in last week’s victory.
MIKE FURDA, Mt. Union – Indian Creek grad had an impressive outing in last week’s win. He had six tackles and two sacks.
DASHON REDMAN, Mt. Union – Steubenville product posted a tackle in last week’s win.
CROSS COUNTRY
FALLON DOYLE, Wheeling Jesuit – St. John Central product finished 90th in the Atlantic Regional meet last weekend in a time of 23 minutes, 49 seconds.
JENNA FURR, Wheeling Jesuit – Caldwell grad was 102nd at the regional meet, finishing in 24 minutes, 8 seconds.
ALBERT SCHRIMP, Wheeling Jesuit – Wheeling Park grad was 42nd in the Atlantic Regional with a time of 32 minutes, 52 seconds.
DANIELLE STONER, Clarion – Bellaire High grad finished 127th in the Atlantic Regional in a time of 25 minutes, 42 seconds.
LEAH FIGURSKI, West Liberty – Buckeye Local product ran a 25:02 to finish 122nd at the Atlantic Regional.
HANNAH SURFACE, Alderson-Broaddus – East Richland Christian grad ran 24:34 in the Midwest Regional last weekend to finish 162nd.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
KARLI BONAR, Findlay – Shadyside product averaged 12.5 points a game in a 1-1 exhibition season for the Oilers. She had a team-high 17 points in a win against Otterbein, including five, 3-point goals. The Oilers open the regular season Saturday in Nashville against Trevecca Nazarene.
WRESTLING
CHARLIE KEENAN, Kent State – Former Big Red state runnerup won four straight wrestle-back matches to claim eighth place in the Eastern Michigan Open.
