Shadyside blanks Bridgeport in baseball
BROOKSIDE — Shadyside coach B.A. Holloway says he has trust in Anthony Coggins. The Tigers’ righthander showed why Monday afternoon at Niekro Diamond.
Coggins twirled a nifty three-hitter in propelling the Tigers to a 5-0 win over debuting Bridgeport before a nice-sized turnout. He struck out two and walked four in the sharp route-going effort.
“I have trust in Anthony. I also coach him in football. I have a lot of confidence in Anthony,” Holloway said. “He was real sharp tonight. We also made some nice defensive plays behind him.
“We stranded quite a few runners (10) but this is a nice win. Any OVAC win is nice,” he added. “Bridgeport has a good team and Mike (Muklewicz) does a great job with them. They are in our class, so it’s nice to get out of here with a win.”
Shadyside improved to 2-1 and will host Steubenville Central this afternoon. The Bulldogs bid to bounce back today with Bishop Donahue paying a visit.
The Tigers scored the only run they needed in the third inning. Collin Holmes singled, advanced to third on an error and scored on a Billy Johnson single.
Shadyside added two more tallies in the sixth frame. Will Brown walked followed by a Colton Selmon single. Both moved up a base via a sacrifice bunt from JJ Shreffler. Holmes singled to plate Brown before Coggins singled to bring home Selmon.
The visitors tacked on two insurance tallies in the seventh. Brown produced an RBI single while Coggins forced home the second by coaxing a bases-loaded walk.
“We had our chances. We just couldn’t get a clutch hit,” Muklewicz said. “We also gave them a couple of runs. We didn’t make some plays when we needed to.
“I am not disappointed in our effort. Everything we did or did not do tonight is fixable. We just haven’t been outside enough,” he added. “I thought John Michael (Simmons) pitched well. He kept us in the game.”
Simmons started on the hill for the Bulldogs, working a strong five innings. He scattered five hits, yielding two runs while fanning one and passing two.
Bridgeport failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities in each of the first two innings.
The Bulldogs got their initial two runners on base in the first via successive walks to no avail. In the second frame, back-to-back one-out singles proved fruitless.
All told, Bridgeport stranded seven runners.
Selmon was the batting standout for Shadyside. The talented catcher delivered three singles while Johnson and Holmes each had two hits.
The winners played error-free ball.
