Local players dominate all-district football

CAMBRIDGE — The annual All-Eastern District Football Team, which is selected by a media panel from throughout the district, features numerous area players and coaches, including seven area natives who received special accolades.

The immediate area took all three of the top honors in Division V.

Union Local’s Braden Lucas was named the offensive player of the year, while Martins Ferry’s Dalton Hoover earned the defensive player of the year award. Union Local’s Bruce Stiles was recognized as the district coach of the year.

Lucas, who didn’t play football as a junior, showed no signs of rust as he helped guide the Jets to an 8-2 record, an OVAC Class 3A title and a berth in the Division V playoffs. He posted an impressive stat line for the season, including 715 yards rushing, 408 yards receiving and 27 total touchdowns. He also threw for a touchdown.

Hoover, meanwhile, was a two-way standout for Coach Dave Bruney’s team. At linebacker, Hoover recorded 130 tackles during the regular season and added 27 more during the Riders’ playoff loss to Portsmouth West. Offensively, Hoover rushed for 1,408 yards and 20 touchdowns during the regular season.

Stiles, meanwhile, led his team to its first OVAC title and only third trip to the postseason and second home game in the opening round. The Jets started the season 6-0 before falling in consecutive weeks to Meadowbrook and St. Clairsville. They rebounded with two wins to close and dropped a heart breaker to Columbus Academy in the playoffs.

In Division VI, Shadyside’s Connor Banco and Buckeye Trail’s Austin Snodgrass shared the district player of the year honor.

Banco — a rugged two-way standout for Coach Mark Holenka’s team — was impressive on both sides of the ball. He rushed for 982 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also caught 19 passes for 251 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, the junior posted 67 tackles and six sacks from his linebacker spot.

Snodgrass, meanwhile, was the Warriors’ go-to-guy on the ground. In setting a single-season rushing record at Trail, Snodgrass rushed 223 times for 1,867 yards and 20 touchdowns. He broke the mark of OVAC Hall of Famer Jeff Snedegar.

In Division VII, River’s Lukas Isaly made it three consecutive years as the top player in the district. The Pilots quarterback, who has his team in the regional championship game this Friday at Maysville, was brilliant all season.

On the offensive side, Isaly completed 96-of-192 passes for 1,451 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also rushed for 16 touchdowns, while accumulating 1,085 yards on 166 carries during the regular season. Defensively, the rangy defensiveback had 40 solo and 34 assisted tackles. He also picked off two passes.

Monroe Central’s Jay Circosta was named the Coach of the Year in the district after guiding his Seminoles to a 6-4 record. Last season, the Seminoles finished with just a 1-9 record.
