Off the Tee: Pappas fends off Jeffries for BHCC club title

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Bill Pappas has been a member at Belmont Hills Country Club for just two years.

That was plenty of time to become the ‘club champion.’

By virtue of posting three steady rounds in the 70s, Pappas fought off Adam Jeffries and Anthony Reasbeck to win the club championship Sunday afternoon on the challenging par 72 layout.

Pappas found himself three shots off of Jeffries’ lead after the opening round last Saturday. However, a 36-hole grind lied ahead on Sunday.

Jeffries, who was a standout collegiate player at Alderson-Broaddus University and a former St. C. High standout, owned a two-shot lead over Reasbeck entering the final day. He extended his margin to seven over Reasbeck and four over Pappas.

However, in the final round, Pappas remained steady. After rounds of 76 and 74, he posted a 75, while Jeffries struggled to a degree to a 10-over, 82. Reasbeck also posted an 82, dropping him to fourth place overall.

Thanks to a pair of Sunday rounds in the mid 70s, Doug Brannon climbed the leaderboard to finish third overall with a 233.

Fifth place overall in the championship flight went to Brent Jorden with a 238.

Others to complete all three rounds were Jay Davis, Bryan Woodford, Dave Murphy and Clay Wood.
